President Obama’s foreign policy is based on fantasy

  1. 1. Military power still matters, despite what the la-la-land liberals in the Obama administration say.

  2. 2. The US, acting through NATO, should put boots on the ground and ensure the liberty of the non-Russian parts of Ukraine.

Generally speaking its probably best to just stay out of the mess and fall in line with whatever the EU wants to do.

But there is this tiny voice in my head that says do the unexpected like offer the Ukraine a no flyzone over east Ukraine.

Not an option. The Russian Air Force has closer bases and equipment that would make life very difficult for USAF or USN assets, unless the USAF would be prepared to put F-22 Raptors in-theatre.

That's not how she's perceived on the other side of the pond. Germans call her Mutti, those on the European periphery rather refer to her as the iron chancellor. Forbes didn't name her the second most powerful person in the world in 2012 and the fourth most powerful person in the world the year prior for being all talk. It was Mutti who - rightly or wrongly - put the Euro zone on its austerity path. And Mutti stuck with it and had the rest of the Euro zone stick with it when it was less than popular to put it mildly. She pizzed the Euro zone countries off and yet held them together all at the same time. No, no, Mutti is more than talk. Much more.

Germany would not risk losing Russian energy unless and until there was a reliable, alternative supply secured.

I very much doubt there will be substantive sanctions coming out of Europe. There just isn't enough financial strength and cohesion there. :(

That would be interesting for us spectators.

Get your reality out of my gi joe play time.

If you wanted to mess with the Russian Air Force without the Raptors, the best assets available are the RAF and Luftwaffe Typhoons. Being at an appreciable advantage over the Russian Su-27 and MiG-35, not to mention any F-15, F-16, or F-18, they might give the Russian pilots pause for thought. ;)

But it won't happen. The only things that can rein in the Russian military are a collapsing economy, or collapsing public support, if the Ukraine turns bloody. :(

How, without affecting our ability to buy their product? The north american fracking boom is well and good but it hasn't matured to the point where it can supplant russian supply yet.

the pipelines out of Russia have valves, ya know, and

the valves outside of russia can be turned off.

No Boom Boom Required.
