Trying to seek advice for a confused Canadian!!

I moved to the US Oct 2013 and married my fiance the same month. Tax season is around the corner and from the research I've done, I understand that I will be filing an "exit return" or "departure return" with the CRA for the 2013 tax year (by paper).

My situation is fairly simple...

- In 2013, I only worked in Ontario (Jan-September 2013)

- Because I worked more than 6 months in that tax year in Canada, I will file a normal resident tax return (just as I've always done)

- I understand on the tax form there is a spot where it asks "did you cease to be a resident of Canada" and that's where I say "yes" and put the date I left (Oct 6, 2013)

What I'm confused about is the address section... do I put my current Florida address (because there's no spot to put State, zip code, etc) and for the marital status as of Dec 31st 2013, I'll of course put married, but in the section where it asks about my husband.... he's American so he doesn't have a SIN...

Maybe I've got this totally backwards?? Anyone with any experience in filing the "departure return" with the CRA please help a girl out smile.png

for the SIN you put all zeros and you'll need to put his wages for the year converted into CDN funds. I did this last year with my husband.

The hard part is the US part of the return, if you worked in the USA at all. You have to file the Canadian return first, then then US return using your Canadian income as a foreign tax exclusion.

topic has been moved from Off Topic forum to the Canada Regional forum as the question concerns an issue specific to Canadians

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Could you elaborate a little on what you did for the foreign tax exclusion?

I'm still working on it. :/

Ah - Ok. Yeah, it seems complex, if nothing else....

If you figure out some magic tricks, let me know! All I know if that I want to maximize any benefit that I can from being married as well as having to go through this long process ;)
