I'll call it what it is, stupid double standard. What's worse is some black people try to defend using it, like passionately. I've lost my temper at work because some black dude came in my office and used it. Then had the nerve to try and say I'm being uppity because I use proper english. That wasn't a good day at all.

I agree, it is a double standard, and it is dumb. I understand what the NFL is trying to do, but this is going to primarily affect black players, not whites. Will it still be ok to say you're mother's a #######, or your sister whatever? Insulting trash talk will still be ok, mins this one word. The sad part of it is, the league shouldn't even have to get involved. The players shouldn't approve of it themselves, IMO.

You're right, the players should stand up and say they won't say that word. But like you said, it's a hard habit to break. I did it, so can anyone else.

I think trash talk will always be around. But it's only personal if you make it that way. The n-word should be looked at as the worst thing you can say to any black person, but it's not anymore. And it's a shame because at one point it was used to strip away all humanity within a black person when they were hung or killed in some other brutal fashion.

Why would you want to marginalise such a worthy cause like that? whistling.gif

Cause Obama got one for being black. That thought process I put in to create SEVERAL terms of affection was draining. I want my prize. Next, I'll work on world peace...

How, exactly, do you drain a term of affection? huh.png

I would tell you, but this is the new family-friendly VJ. Wouldn't want the ban hammer to come out and put me in solitary. NB said it's dark and scary there. I believe him.

Exactly. To me it's like calling a woman the c-word. It's not a term of endearment.

When the NFL gets rid of the racial slur, Redskins, as a team name along with the mascot THEN they can tell players what they can and can't say to each other on the field.

It's a bunch of hypocritical BS. The idiots refs can barely make correct calls as it is, so what they are now going to be the word police too and start throwing flags for players calling each other the N word? In that case we need rules for people calling anyone on the field of play a F** or a C*** or B***** because they are all bad words too. Matter of fact why don't we just make everyone wear pink uniforms and throw unicorns at each other. It's FOOTBALL.

To my knowledge no player has dropped that word in a press conference, interview, or something of that nature. We don't need more dumb azz rules in the NFL

As far as merits to the word and it's usage today, it does not bother me that much when I hear other Black people use it. I use it very rarely, it's not so much a part of my daily vocabulary as it is younger guys these days. Most I hear it is when I listen to hip hop and it doesn't bother me. Nonetheless if Black people want to purge that word from our lexicon it starts at home. It starts with raising your children with strong morals, proper english, education, and values to be successful in life. It's things you can't police. Furthermore it's one of those issues I think that can only be resolved within the Black community and frankly it's uncomfortable hearing non-Blacks tell Black people what word is acceptable or not to use among each other.

These are very good points.

This is a case of false equivalence. A large majority of Native American people have no problem with the name of Washington's football team. It is just a vocal minority and a host of outsiders making noise.

Very different to the "n" word.

I'd get rid of the F word as well since it's a slur against gay people. And the players can still say the word if they want, just accept the penalty that comes with it and all is golden. The redskins should be changed IMO.

It's been used in a sports show, I believe someone lost a job, black man called another one the n-word within a crowd's earshot.

It bothers me more when a black person uses it, because they should know better. And hip hop was way better when it had more substance and less cuss words and misogyny. As a people, we should get rid of that word.

I think it is very relevant and it is equal because on one hand you have a league that wants to police a word that it finds objectionable but at the same time have a team name that is a racial slur.

So are we going to debate whether or not Redskins is a racial slur? Because I'm prepared with the evidence to support my claim counselor ;)

Yeah Marvin no disagreement with me on what you said. I am just opposed of the league being the word police. I like pro. football, I'm a diehard fan and I'm just gonna have to take a libertarian hands off approach when it comes to the NFL haha. Let the guys play and they can sort it out. If the players all come together and say hey we aren't going to do this and then thats one thing but to add a penalty for saying a word to another player is ridiculous to me.

I can see it now. dude gets a game winning TD catch runs it in the end zone and it gets called back because someone called the QB a bad word.

Let's not use football to debate the merit of a word that is, unfortunately, a culture issue. I'm ok with having the discussion just not using football as the backdrop for it.

I can't post links right now, but the last poll I've seen had the number of native Americans not viewing the term as derogatory at or about 90%, according to CBS.

I'm pretty sure the percentage who feel the "n" word is derogatory is something similar.
