Yeah I want to get a pet and me and the wife seem to aggree on Turtles--so who here keeps them or has kept them and are they difficult to keep?

I want to know too...my fiance loves them and I want to get one for him when he gets here. I would also appreciate some info. :yes::yes:

3/24/11 Received 10 year Green Card in the mail - Done. Feels good :-) 'till we do this again for US Citizenship.

12/5/11 mailed packet for Naturalization

12/9/11 was received by USCIS.

4/6/12 received letter for fingerprint appn.

4/23/12 9am fingerprint appointment - done :-)

4/30/12 Recieved Letter for Interview - Sche. 5/31

5/31/12 Interview & Testing

5/31/12 Testing Approved - Waiting for next step

6/21/12 Rcvd email, placed application in the oath sched. que :-)

6/25/12 Rcvd letter - Oath Ceremony is on 7/11/12 @ 9:15am :-)

A lady that owned a pet store at home told me they can carry alot of diseases. Thats why you can not buy a turtle from where I am from. Now thats just what that ONE lady told us. I see them in all the pet stores down here, but the containers they live in always looks dirty to me.

Still waiting for our cards...Had to file I-90 as they sent them to the wrong address.

March 9th, 2010, Received GC that has been lost in the mail for 10 months. Still waiting for my son's that is lost as well.

Filed Waiver for my son's 10 year GC and it was approved. He finally received his GC after its been missing for 2 years.

Thanking God this is over for 10 years.

The best suggestion I can make is that you put your turtle in some sunlight every now and then to keep his shell in good condition, otherwise they get very soft and split. And of course, keep their tank nice and clean and give him somewhere to get out of the water easily. If you put real water plants in their tank, don't expect them to last long, they rip them to shreds... Little buggers they are... :hehe:

Turtles require a lot more maintenence than people realize. I bought a box turtle because friend of mine had one and I thought it woud be an easy pet to take care of..........I was wrong. She only wanted to eat dog food/worms(yes dog food-that is what the pet store fed her), she was sick and I had to take her to the vet a lot. I could not hibernate her so I had to keep her in an indoor terrarium, it always had to be heated to around 80 degrees. She was worth all of the effort and money I have to admit :yes:

I loved my little turtle, I went away for the weekend a few years ago and left my Mom in charge, well let's just say I have not seen my little turtle ever since. She wandered off :(

Anyway-if anyone has any questions just let me know.

My mom has had pet turtles ever since I was a little kid. They're not huge amounts of work, BUT.....

IMHO, turtles are not really meant for captivity (as opposed to a hamster, for example). My mother doesn't want the turtles anymore as she would prefer to now see them free, but they are really a lifetime committment. They would not survive in the wild.

If you decide to get turtles, get ready to be in it for the long haul.

I felt so guilty keeping her indoors(although she had the run of the place-because I never kept her in her terrarium), but in the winter is was sad watching her get sluggish-her natural instinct was to hibernate but I didn't let her. She was so tiny and cute, but as I said she had some health issues-most likely from the pet store. She wasn't cheap!!!!

They are a lifetime commitment-turtles can live forever!!!!! I hope my little one is alive somewhere :(

I miss my turtle now :crying:

the water turtes can carry salmonella-don't let them run around on the countertops, or kitchen tables :no:

Seriously though-they can carry diseases, if anyone buys one-I would suggest taking it to a vet to make sure it is healthy.
