If Canada will be taken over by 1000 heavily armed Jihadis , supported by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, will USA stand aloof and do nothing?

This is the exact situation. USA-EU are supporting 1000 heavily armed Nazis , came from Canada ( their ancestors were in the Ukranian Nationalist Army who fought alongside Hitler but were allowed to emigrate to Canada in 1946 ). They just ousted the elected President and taken over all Government buildings. Now the people on the South and east of the country who are Russians and Orthodox Christians and are about 40 percent of the population do not want to be ruled by these bandits who are Catholic. The Orthodox people are asking help from Russia to declare independence from Ukraine. Putin will invade Ukraine, and USA-EU can do nothing.

I guess if you can't get enough people excited by screaming 'nazis' you can add injury to the insult by yelling 'and Catholics! '

Extreme right wing groups are playing a prominant role in all of this, but they were already in the Ukraine. Canada has a lot immigrants of Ukrainian descent, but if any nazi sympathizers ever made it in, they are probably approaching 100 years old by now. Not much influence on current events.

But yeah, people in the south and east will never accept a government that includes nazis, guys like Oleh Tyahnybok, for example. The fact that the current government overturned minority language laws and banned Russian media on the first day does not bode well. Crimea has a referendum scheduled for May 26th. If everyone stays out of it and lets the people decide, they will either be independant or going back to Russia.

As the Euromaidan protests in the Ukrainian capitol of Kiev culminated this week, displays of open fascism and neo-Nazi extremism became too glaring to ignore. Since demonstrators filled the downtown square to battle Ukrainian riot police and demand the ouster of the corruption-stained, pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovich, it has been filled with far-right streetfighting men pledging to defend their country’s ethnic purity.

White supremacist banners and Confederate flags were drapedinside Kiev’s occupied City Hall, and demonstrators have hoisted Nazi SS and white power symbols over a toppled memorial to V.I. Lenin. After Yanukovich fled his palatial estate by helicopter, EuroMaidan protesters destroyed a memorial to Ukrainians who died battling German occupation during World War II. Sieg heil salutes and the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol have become an increasingly common site in Maidan Square, and neo-Nazi forces have established “autonomous zones” in and around Kiev.

An Anarchist group called AntiFascist Union Ukraine attempted to join the Euromaidan demonstrations but found it difficult to avoid threats of violence and imprecations from the gangs of neo-Nazis roving the square. “They called the Anarchists things like Jews, blacks, Communists,” one of its members said. “There weren’t even any Communists, that was just an insult.”

“There are lots of Nationalists here, including Nazis,” the anti-fascist continued. “They came from all over Ukraine, and they make up about 30% of protesters.”

Oh this should be fun. smile.png

Regardless the Crimea will be Russian soon. Ridiculous to piss Putin off. Obama or the EU will do nothing to help them.

I think, technically, the way the Ukraine President was ousted was internationally illegal therefore the current Ukraine government is illegal and should not be recognized by the UN and the EU and the US... but then, who really follows international law.??

Regardless, any Russian troops on the ground, outside of the bases Russia leases from the Ukraine, are in contravention of international law. The "militia" that have secured the two airports are, according to a number of sources, too well equipped, trained and organised to be anything but Russian troops, either regular army, or, more likely, special forces.

President Putin appears to be gambling on provoking a Ukrainian military response, to give him a pretext for military action. He seems to think there will be no effective consequences. Will the international community oblige him and allow the Ukraine to be broken up?

Putin will get what he wants. Nobody will stop it because they are weak. Russia holds most of the cards.

The militia is primarily made up of members of Berkut, the recently disbanded Ukraine special forces units. They are definitely well trained and many made their way to Crimea after they were disbanded by the new government. Obviously they are pro Russian, but they are Ukraine citizens, although many likely have Russian passports by now.

Putin doesn't need to provoke anything. He can just wait and the people will vote to join Russia. The population of Crimea is roughly 60% Russian, 15% Tatar, and 25% Ukrainian. Last time I was there, every car had a little Russian flag or bumper sticker. No doubt where there loyalties are.

it should be a Ukraine decision, the international community should stay out of it...

the Ukraines in the north and Kiev want stronger ties to the EU, while the Ukraines near Crimean want stronger ties to Russia..

the protests and riots were all done in Kiev and the population who live there...

so if riots and protests start near Crimean, if they protest the new government... then what.???

Russian soldiers in southern Ukraine and UN forces in northern Ukraine.???

Beyond that, Putin's backed into a corner here already. If he bends over on this, he's done politically in Russia. So unless he's thinking about retirement, if push comes to shove, he's going to be all in on this.

And if he goes all in, will the Western leaders be able to stand by, without losing all foreign policy credibility themselves?
