Slain girl’s father: ‘I knew they were gonna kill Petey’

Damion Bernard “Little Petey” Clayton was meant to die three months before he was gunned down Saturday at the Macon Little League field on Anthony Road.

He was the target of a Nov. 21 shooting less than a mile away on Cedar Avenue, according to an arrest warrant in that case.

Dontavius “Man Man” Mintz, 16, allegedly got out of a car and pointed a gun at Clayton, firing several times, the warrant states.

Bullets instead struck 16-year-old Alyssa Zari Jackson, whose family says she had been out talking to Clayton when the shooting started.

Clayton, 16, ran in front of a truck headed down Moseley Avenue, a block north of Anthony and just west of Pio Nono Avenue.

Charleston “Brother” Burnett III, 13, was inside the truck. He was grazed in the head by a bullet and survived.

A second shooter also was involved in the November incident, but the shooter’s identity was unknown to police when the murder warrant was drafted in December.

‘Too little too late’

Clayton was found at the ball field with gunshot wounds to his head, torso and arm. He died later at a local hospital.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, he was reported shot at the Anthony Road ballpark across from Henderson Stadium.

Two teenagers, 17-year-old Jedarrius Treonta Meadows Jr. and 15-year-old Roland Watson, have been charged with murder in the killing.

Sebastian Jackson, Alyssa’s father, said he had spoken to Clayton in the days after his daughter’s slaying. He warned Clayton to protect himself.

“I knew they were gonna kill Petey, which eventually they did,” Sebastian Jackson, 43, said Thursday.

“But there is nothing that you can do. ... The young man had attempted to change some things about himself and what was going on in his life. It just proved to be too little too late.”

‘Just cause you gotta gun ...’

In the hours after the pre-Thanksgiving shooting that cost Alyssa Jackson her life, Clayton appears to have posted messages to her and Burnett on social media.

“I pray to GOD my lil brother alright get well Charleston Burnett,” he wrote on a Facebook account that is now being maintained by someone close to him.

Burnett wrote back, “Im good.”

Clayton then posted, “Rip to lyssa ... life is to short to loose it over (expletive).”

He went on to blast the “hood,” “money” and a “beef,” about which he didn’t elaborate.

In early January, Clayton posted, “Just cause you gotta gun don’t mean you gone use it.”

A couple of weeks later, on Jan. 17, when Dontavius Mintz was jailed in connection with Alyssa Jackson’s slaying, Clayton posted an “R.I.P.” in her honor on Facebook.

Five days later, he wrote, “Gotta keep my eyes open while I’m in those streets.”

‘I am so sorry’

Clayton had a history with at least one of his alleged killers.

Bibb County Juvenile Court records show that Roland Watson witnessed a fight Aug. 29, 2011, that resulted in Clayton being charged with affray and violating his probation.

Clayton was sentenced to six months probation, 40 hours of community service and counseling.

The records don’t show what offense prompted Clayton to be put on probation.

Juvenile records in Georgia generally are open only after a second or subsequent offense or if one of the offenses includes a serious felony.

The Telegraph also requested access to court records for Meadows and Watson, but none was available for release. It is unclear whether the teenagers have criminal records that haven’t reached a level that would make them subject to release.

The gunfire that killed Jackson in November was a result of an ongoing feud between members of the Crip street gang and boys “claiming Bloomfield” who also had a Crip affiliation, according to the arrest warrant.

Authorities haven’t said whether Clayton, Meadows or Watson are gang members.

No bond has been set for Watson or Meadows.

Watson was being held at a regional youth detention center. Meadows was locked up at the Bibb jail.

A prayer vigil for Clayton is set for 5 p.m. Friday at the ball field on Anthony Road.

His funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church.

“I’d like to offer my condolences to Petey and his family in all the ways that I possibly can,” Sebastian Jackson said.

“I am so sorry that they’ve lost poor Petey, because I really despise the idea that people would have the misfortune to experience the same pains that I have in losing a child.”

Bring out the giant straw man why don't you? No one is blaming the gun No one is saying that guns have legs and run around shooting people. Wishing to restrict certain aspects of gun ownership and use is not blaming the gun for anything at all. No idea what 'thug' culture is either. I know there is gang culture, and if you cared, which you don't, you would know that the police and communities that have a large gang presence are working together to reduce the influence and destructiveness of gangs and providing new paths for young people to follow. This has resulted in drastic reductions in gun violence. If you cared, you would know this but you don't, so you don't.
