Hello All,

quick question on the US passport.

do we get after naturalization interview at the location or later?

what are you guys planning to do?

You can only apply for a US passport after you have become a US citizen and you only become a US citizen at the oath ceremony, not at the interview. If you pass your interview, your oath ceremony will be scheduled for a later date and you will receive a naturalization certificate at the ceremony. You can use that certificate to apply for a passport at any location that accepts passport applications (post office, district courthouse, passport application center, etc). Depending on whether or not you apply for an expedited passport, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to receive in the mail.

The passport has a separate fee... around $120 I think, but I'm not sure.

Passports are issued by The State Department whereas the N400 process goes through USCIS, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security... they are two completely different government agencies.

These are separate processes because there is no requirement for you to ever have a US passport. I think it's a good idea to get one, because it's an excellent proof of citizenship and is easier to replace than a naturalization certificate, but actually only 35% of US citizens have US passports. If you're not planning to travel abroad, you don't need one.

Congrats Zafrogie!

Had my interview yesterday as well. Waited 45mins in the lobby (I arrived 30mins earlier). The officer was very nice. I sworn and gave her my GC, passport & ID. She went through my N400, asked me ques (Y/N), and had me signed some forms.

We then started with reading & writing test followed by the civics. Questions were easier than what I anticipated. She asked if there's anymore docs/evidence that I want to include in my application. I handed her proof of joint bank acct, utility bill and a copy of local newspaper article about my son winning the nationwide Gerber photo contest with my family picture attached (She congratulated me about it and told me she actually seen it before).

She then gave me a form saying I passed, congratulated me again and told me that I'll be receiving a letter confirming my oath date & location.

Felt relief that I'm closer now to getting done with USCIS.

Just passed my naturalization interview at the Norfolk field office. Officer was super nice, it was like talking to a friend.Arrived early,and waited about 45mins to be called in.

Once inside, she had me swear in, then asked for my passport, green card and drivers license. She started with the civics test, questions asked were;

1.who wrote the declaration of independence

2. one state that borders mexico

3.name the two political parties

4.party that the president belongs to

5.who is commander in chief of the military

6.cant remember the last one,but they were easy.

Next she went through the application line by line, then had me sign the two photographs originally submitted and also a few forms, then congratulated me that i was approved and should wait for the ceremony date to arrive in the mail and that the ceremony will be held at the courthouse in richmond.

Even though the USCIS site states that Norfolk office does same day naturalization, she told me thats only for active duty military or spouses pcs-ing overseas with partner.

Hope this info helps someone in the future. So happy this long process is winding down, end almost in sight

yea you guys are right, I updated my Field Office with the correct one, there are couple in New York Metro area, however mine is Long Island City (Queens) branch.

Checking march filers, yup it seems there are like 4 march filers from NYC and none of them received interview letters, they are in line though. Couple from February they didn't receive interview letters even. Didn't bother checking with January Filers. oops waitey waitey.

Congrats, Techguru! I am going through the Norfolk office as well....however in line for interview since 5 weeks and no new yet. Did you apply through military or why did it get so fast with you?

Just passed my naturalization interview at the Norfolk field office. Officer was super nice, it was like talking to a friend.Arrived early,and waited about 45mins to be called in.

Once inside, she had me swear in, then asked for my passport, green card and drivers license. She started with the civics test, questions asked were;

1.who wrote the declaration of independence

2. one state that borders mexico

3.name the two political parties

4.party that the president belongs to

5.who is commander in chief of the military

6.cant remember the last one,but they were easy.

Next she went through the application line by line, then had me sign the two photographs originally submitted and also a few forms, then congratulated me that i was approved and should wait for the ceremony date to arrive in the mail and that the ceremony will be held at the courthouse in richmond.

Even though the USCIS site states that Norfolk office does same day naturalization, she told me thats only for active duty military or spouses pcs-ing overseas with partner.

Hope this info helps someone in the future. So happy this long process is winding down, end almost in sight

Thanks Milka. My wife is active duty military, so I was able to file through the Nebraska service center, and I was able to do a walk in biometrics almost a month earlier than my actual schedule date, I think a combination of both those factors helped shaved some time off my actual wait time. Hope you do get scheduled real soon. From what I have gathered, the court in Richmond holds oath ceremonies once per month.

No text regarding fingerprint. Once the fingerprint is successful done, that when they transfer your file over to your local field office. After I completed my fingerprint, my status never changed, interview letter just turned up in the mail.
