when younger, i had a house broken in too..i looked like a hippie chopf##k in those days..i asked the cops " are you going to dust for fingerprints?' they told me to go ** myself and have a nice day...

sorry to hear about your break-in... totally sucks! hope they catch the culprit/s.

we're moving pretty soon, so while we are packing up, i will take the opportunity to mark (that pen is a super idea!) and catalog all the high-ticket and irreplaceable items, as well as picking up a fire safe for documents and smaller valuables.

almaty... you're lucky the cops came at all. i think my parents are still waiting on them to come from a break-in back in '91.

Wow, I'm jealous that the police actually cared. Someone broke into my apartment and stole my laptop and left a bloody fingerprint (I'm not saying that for emphasis, there was actually a fingerprint with their blood, they must have hurt themselves breaking down my door) and the police didn't give a hoot. They didn't dust for prints or do anything other than take a report. I even had my serial number (very uncharacteristic of me) but they never found my poor laptop. I even tried calling pawn shops in the area but they wouldn't help me. It was sad because I'm a student and couldn't afford another laptop... Hence my crappy old desktop I use now! But it's a good reminder to keep serial numbers. I like the ultraviolet pen idea, but I doubt the police here would think to check stuff they find with a UV light...

that is sad! maybe they came because it was a substantial loss, we totalled all receipts I could find, and it came to $6700.00 so sucky.

I bet you have a good chance of getting some of that stuff back. Good thing you at least had receipts, even if you had no serial numbers!
