Wow, Charles...not doggin on ya here, just seriously wondering... you would really 'spank' your 17 year old, especially being a daughter? Seems inappropriate to me at that age (I sometimes spanked Corey when he was young too, but never with too *much* force, but I realize that will be inappropriate to some as well), but maybe that's just me..dunno. At any rate, I know you have the right to raise your kids how you want and all that..but ..really?? M.

Of course that's a story, but the many incidents of self-defense with firearms never get told, so all the public sees is the bad.

I know that news media reporting of crime gives rise to a perception that there is more crime than there actually is (specifically crimes of a violent and sexual nature), but are you suggesting that the accidental/deliberate shooting of children in high schools across the country is really balanced by the "self defence" argument. That's a bit "breaking a few eggs to make an omelette isn't it?"

Ah, but this is the US not the UK and there are many other differences as well.

Sure - but is it really unreasonable to ask why is it that this sort of school gun crime isn't as prevalent in developed European countries as it is in the US. The main difference seems to be the ready availability of firearms - which always seem to find their ways into the wrong hands regardless of the number of background checks imposed on potential owners.

All the more reason to get a concealed carry permit if one is so inclined. :)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that police shooting casualties are usually the result of being shot with their own weapon during a struggle.

In fact, why stop at guns? Why not make things really interesting and allow people to carry swords and axes to work? ;)

More and more states are adopting reasonable concealed carry laws. I don't have the stats handy, but so far it appears that areas with high numbers of law-abiding gun owners have lower crime rates. As they say, "an armed society is a polite society".

 if such a situation warranted it. but i've not spanked her for about 13 years ;)

why? we can't carry guns to work where i'm at. although i suspect that would make end of year evaluations quite interesting

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.
