  1. 1. Unidentified Pentagon officials said the cuts will leave the U.S. militarily ?capable of defeating any adversary, but too small for protracted foreign occupations".

    • Sounds good to me. We shouldn't be involved in any "protracted occupations" anyway.
    • We're supposed to be a freakin' superpower. That means being able to sustain a protracted occupation! If the adversary knows we're not capable, all they have to do to win is wait us out.

Former Vice President ####### Cheney responded Monday night to the Obama administration’s proposal to cut the U.S. Army to its lowest point since before World War II.

Calling into Fox News’ “Hannity,” Cheney declared the proposed cuts to be “absolutely dangerous” and “just devastating.”

“I have not been a strong supporter of Barack Obama. But this really is over the top. It does enormous long-term damage to our military,” Cheney said. ”They act as though it is like highway spending and you can turn it on and off. The fact of the matter is he is having a huge impact on the ability of future presidents to deal with future crises that are bound to arise.”

Cheney also said America’s allies are losing confidence in the United States and that the president’s budget reflects his priorities.

...

“And I think the whole thing is not driven by any change in world circumstances, it is driven by budget considerations. He would much rather spend the money on food stamps than he would on a strong military or support for our troops.”

Look I do think social health and welfare is a very important issue. But I think a world in which other nation's militaries are subsidized by our military makes for a more peaceful world that reflects American interests. The more independent militaries there are around the world, the more chances for conflict there will be. Like guns......

Another one of the effects of this is going to put veterans on the street who have already served 10 or 12 years who want to be careerists.

Promotions will be harder to come by and good folks will get passed over and won't be eligible to reenlist. All the experience will be gone and our military poorly trained and unprepared. But hey, we won't have the long term commitment of paying retirement benefits.

That's fine, then let those who get called to go to war have the option to say no.

Not if they're in the military.

That's my point. They expect us to die for this country, yet, they're trying to skim over the men and women who signed on the dotted line. I've got friends that are already affected by this.

If you sign up for the military, you should expect that going over seas into a war zone is a possibility.

The question is .... Is the world a more dangerous place than years ago.

When was the world not a dangerous place? I would suggest it always was, always will be. Being able to defend the homeland and proactively address overseas threats is an important and necessary investment. Plus, there's so much tech that comes out of the exercise. It's worth it.

Without a dominating US military force? I think so.

Nearly all of the worlds greatest peace time era's occur during a time in which an unopposed "superpower" maintains a dominate military force.

Anything that comes out of Cheneys mouth isn't worth much. I reject the comparison frankly. What we spend on TANF amounts to a beans to what we spend on the military. I love how Cheney pops his head up now and then to stir the class warfare pot again.

As much of a progressive hawk I am, I agree that defense spending needs to be cut back. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think the military is our biggest expense.

Unless we plan on going toe to toe with China in the next couple of decades we do not need a large military. Clinton started the scale down in the 90s and Bush increased it to involve us in two wars that most people now agree were unnecessary.

Can anyone here make an argument as to why we need a large scale military? I know it sucks for people to lose their jobs and the families but being able to adapt to the world we live in is what is important.

On a similar note I wish we could finish the job our parents gen didn't and take out North Korea before scaling back the military.
