Uganda Tabloid Prints Names of People It Says Are Homosexual

A Ugandan tabloid newspaper published a list of dozens of people it says are gay and lesbian, the day after the country’s President Yoweri Museveni implemented a law toughening penalties for homosexual acts.

A headline on the front page of the Red Pepper today reads “EXPOSED!” with identifying information including full and partial names and photos of some of the alleged homosexuals appearing on the cover and inside of the publication.

Museveni says he was motivated to sign the new law, which carries a life sentence for “aggravated homosexuality,” after scientists in Uganda found no genetic link to homosexuality. The law threatens freedom of expression as it also criminalizes the “promotion” of homosexuality and curbs groups working on safe-sex issues, New York-based Human Rights Watch said today.

lol Gegel, I am out of upvotes!

So I am putting all y'all on a list. Then I will microfilm it and hide it in a pumpkin. Then we will go down in infamy.

(Who gets my reference, huh, huh?)

I actually work with microfilm fairly often, and it feels awesome. Once I got a package from overseas, and someone had scrawled the contents across the front in ink: microfilm. That was a badass day.

You're well versed in history! (It was either that or commenting on your age, and I am not going down that road....).

Speaking of microfilms... ...upon seeing a typewriter for the first time, my son called it out: Neat! The printer is attached to the keyboard!

 That was long before I was born.

But I did have a typewriter as a kid... it was an antique. You had to count the size of the letters because backspace was one "space" not one letter. I never learned the whole system and my typing on there looked like #######. But I remember m was 3 spaces, i was 1, but I think "l" was 2.

I hope you told your son that typewriters are neat : )

Typewriters are neat. I actually do some of my work on them when I have the time, just for the sheer reaction it draws from people when they see something that was typewritten, not printed, being handed out to them.

I never got used to counting the spaces either, hence my texts are never too neat, and never having formal training, I type at glacial pace, lest I have to deal with erasing or 'whiting out' any words... It is a lost art...

I've been told modern typewriters can backspace by letter not space, and they have the white-out ribbon in them already. Modern technology, man. :)

I recall the old IBM machines had the white out ribbon that lifted characters from the paper making corrections to the original virtually undetectable. That however did little for the carbon copies... I use an old portable Olivetti typewriter, with smudges and all... I am not even sure you can get the IBM ribbons anymore. They were one-time use for each position of the ribbon could only be used for one character...

Don't knock curios of the past, one day you'll be one of those curios. Plus history provides centuries of jokes.

But what of Uganda's gaylist? Is it like a list of best-dressed Ugandans?
