Hey everyone I have a question. I'm currently in the US legally on a B1/B2 visa and my priority date is 1 Aug 07, which in my estimations will become current in March. Now, when this happens do I have to return back to my home country and attend the visa interview or can I do it from here

I emailed NVC about a month ago on asknvc email address but haven't heard anything back. How long does it take for NVC to respond to emails?

usually takes 30 working days. But there is a number you can call nvc, they will assist you.

you have to be in legal status when you PD will be current, if yes you may procced with AOS, but it extra costs and time

I am in the United States and would like to adjust my status. How do I do that?

When a visa is available for your petition (or if the Department of State believes that one will be available in the next several months), the NVC will send you a letter asking what you plan to do. If you respond that you plan to adjust your status, the NVC will hold your file until a USCIS office requests it. If you do not reply, after 30 days, the NVC will begin processing your petition.

Requests for adjustment of status are processed by USCIS not by the NVC. You should contact the USCIS office nearest you for adjustment of status information.

Here is my Interview Experience.. I will tell you the complete run up to the Interview day. Would be helpful for people from India and other countries too.

Police Certificate: I thought this would be done in a week but it took almost 30 days. Just 10 days before my Interview, but others will not have this much of time between their IL and Interview.

Suggestion: Its better to keep the PCC ready 1-2 months before our PD current prediction.

Bio-Metrics: In India, in my city VFS they will not allow us without DS-260. Filled it a day before the Bio-Metrics, its mandatory in some embassies I believe.

Birth Certificate: I didn't had my Birth Certificate (actually I had submitted one to NVC) but if you have not submitted it or lost the original one apply for a new one asap. I had to take a leaves from office and had to run around the officials to get a new certificate from the municipal offices. This can take weeks for some people to get the Certificate in India.

I-864: After your case was completed initially, if you have changed the joint sponsor over the years you need to submit the new I-864 from Joint Sponsor, if your PD is about to be current in few months then I would prefer to carry the new I-864s to the Interview directly.

Tax Documents: Preferable to carry IRS Transcripts & W2s or 1040s & W2s of latest finiancial year, there are some other docs that can be used if you donot have these, check their official sites for detail regulations.

Interview:
My Visa Interview was not in my city, I had to travel to another city Mumbai and take my Interview. I had reached Mumbai 2 days before the Interview day, and stayed in a place 10 mins to the Embassy to avoid any kind of traffic surprises. Went to the Embassy a day before and got familiar with the route.
On the day of Interview, I was a bit complacent since the Embassy was near by and started on exact time and reached the embassy by 8.45 AM (Interview time was 8.30AM). Good thing was that I didnt had to stand in the F1(student visa queue), I was directly asked to go to the Immigrant Visa Interview waiting area.
Initially an Indian lady called me and asked few questions like
Who has petitioned for you ?
Where is he now, what does he do ?
Where will you stay there ?
Are you Married ?
Then the Visa Officer called me for the Interview, he was polite and respectful. He asked the questions like
Who is calling you ?
Where is he right now, and what does he do ?
How many siblings do you have, where are they and what are they doing ?
Are you married ?
What is your profession ?
In which profession will you work there ?
Why didnt you get maried, even though you had a job since a long time ?
Then asked me to wait
I waited for about 30-45 mins, then he told me that he is still processing and asked me to wait further.
I was feeling very sleepy, so I asked him if I can grab a cofee or tea from some vending machines. He allowed me to go and get some thing from the non-immigrant wait area. I waited roughly for another 30-40 mins. Then he called me a told that I will get the Passport in a weeks time. I Thanked him and left the place. He was polite and nice throughout the Interview.
After a week I got a mail that my passport has arrived in the VFS office in our city. Finally I picked up the complete packet, and saw the passport with visa stamped on it. Wow ! it was a great feeling to get the visa. God has heard my prayers.. Yaay ! ! ! :dancing: :joy:

I would like to give special thanks to the VisaJourney dot com site for their very useful content and all the posters, who have posted their Information, Experiences, views which had immensely guided me to do the process correctly and in a timely manner. Highly appreciate the members posting in this F1 thread, it has been my main source of info and guidance, Thanks a lot guys !!  :D:D
