My kids were also successful with the immigrant visa but I don't want to interrupt their schooling. Can I travel to the US for a few weeks and then return for my kids when school is out for the summer.

Yes, you can do that, only you have to receive GC 1st, it can take up to one month and then you are free to travel, only can't stay longer than 6 months.

You're welcome.  When you are there if you did not check the box to receive your SSN you can go to the Social Security office in your area and apply for it two to three weeks after entry.  You can also begin looking/applying for schools for your children.

Isn't that visa in your passport is valid just for the half of year?

And 2nd q, if i'll be entering for the 1st time, will it be an issue if my petitioner will be on vacation? Someone already responded before, that as long as someone will meet me, it's ok, but is it really truth?

You have to enter the US before the expiry date on the visa in passport but at POE it is endorsed by CBP and that on endorsement is valid for one year during which time once you have paid the fee you will receive the hard plastic green card, which would be valid for 2 or 10 years depending on the visa category.

Regarding your second question, in my case when I entered the US for the first time my petitioner (my mum) was in Barbados and it wasn't an issue, no questions were asked by CBP in this regard and no one met us, we took a taxi to the house.

awesome get to medical very early it's a lengthy process I got through about 2:30 PM.  Try reach about 7 if you can, I got there 8  and the place was already packed.  Passport, interview letter immunized card,  4 pics and money bring something to munch on also.....
