Insurance doesn't matter.

1. You must see a Civil Surgeon.

2. The immigration medical is not covered by insurance.

Call around and ask the price. Try to find one at $200 or less. CS locator was linked above.

the medical exam needed is done by a civil surgeon

and

I not read any stories here where a civil surgeon accepted medical insurance.

Not saying it's not possible, just no one has reported success about it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I have called a lot of them today, thank you very much for the link. I'm hoping to hear back from my own GP in the UK to find out what vaccinations I have already had. Surely at 26 I won't need to pay to have the same medical examination as a 70 year old right?! Or am I way off here and I will need everything done from TB shots, blood tests, X-rays etc?

At 26 you will need the physical done, the bloodwork to test for Syphilis and the TB skin test. You only need the chest x-ray depending on the outcome of your TB skin test, i.e. if you have a reaction on your skin that is more than 5mm. It is at the discretion of the civil surgeon, really. I didn't require a chest x-ray.

I had all my vaccines (minus the flu shot) already, so I only paid $150 for the exam, $50 for the bloodwork and TB skin test, and $15 for the shot. The x-ray is an extra cost so hopefully you don't need it. My total came out to $220, call around and get quotes for the best prices. Unless you have very few vaccines already done, you should be able to find a price around there.

Yes, the shots are age dependent. The exam itself is more or less the same.

From what I recall, in the UK, they give the TB vaccine, which means you will test positive for the TB test and will require an x-ray.

You will probably need MMR and maybe a Tdap, but check with the CS to know for sure.

The appt is in 2 parts, so you can see what you are missing, and either get the shot or try to find records.

I am from Hungary and I was given the TB vaccine several times as a child. Still, I have not had a big enough reaction to the skin test to warrant an X-ray. So it depends.

The TB vaccine is only effective for approximately ten years; I received it as a child in the UK but had no reaction to the skin test when I saw a civil-surgeon, so didn't need an x-ray.
