Hello,

I just got my conditional green card and I am going back to the UK for a couple of weeks to see my family. My green card is in my married name but my UK passport is still in my maiden name. The officer at our interview said it should be no problem so long as i have my green card and marriage license with me. I am heading to the DMV tomorrow to get a state issued ID too. Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I get a new passport whilst in the UK with my married name?

Many thanks,

Kate

You could but there really is no need, just make sure you always book tickets in the name that is in your passport and take a copy of your marriage certificate just in case CBP need to see it when you are getting back in the US. Having said that if the process is straightforward to get a new UK passport I'd probably do so just to avoid the hassle.

If you do want to change your passport while you are back in the UK book yourself a same day appointment at the passport office it will cost more but at least you can get it quicker. Or speak to your closest UK consulate and see how quickly it can be done through them before you go.

Brill, thanks Jason. I think I will just keep this passport I have now as it doesn't expire until 2015 and when I am home for longer than 2 weeks I'll get the new one.

Just to confirm, I book my flights with the name in my passport (currently maiden) and make sure I have my green card and my marriage certificate for the immigration officer when I am coming back into the States?

Should I get my Nevada State ID before I go? Or does this have no relevance?

Thanks!

Kate

Correct and your state ID is irrelevant, the only thing that would be good for is everyday ID for bars & buying alcohol here to avoid having to carry your passport and people not knowing what a green card is.
