WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking to correct potential acts of bias spanning three wars, President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to 24 Army veterans following a congressionally mandated review to ensure that eligible recipients were not bypassed due to prejudice.

The unusual mass ceremony, scheduled for March 18, will honor veterans, most of Hispanic or Jewish heritage, who had already been recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest military award. Only three of the recipients are living.

"I never really did worry about decorations," said one of those being honored, Melvin Morris of Cocoa, Fla., who was commended for courageous actions while a staff sergeant during combat operations on Sept. 17, 1969, in the vicinity of Chi Lang, South Vietnam.

Morris, who is black, said in an interview that it never occurred to him that his race might have prevented him from receiving the Medal of Honor. He said it was a huge surprise when the Army contacted him last May about the review and then arranged for a call from Obama.

"I fell to my knees. I was shocked," Morris said. "President Obama said he was sorry this didn't happen before. He said this should have been done 44 years ago."

meh. I don't know any veterans that did it for the medals, or the recognition. Many of my peers fought in Vietnam. They were happy if they could walk into an establishment without being spit on or called baby killers. I finally gave all my uniforms and the rest of the ####### to Goodwill, and although I had lots of fun at the time, and enjoyed the challenges and camaraderie, that was the past. The ones I feel sorry for now are the ones coming back from the last series of conflicts and having to look how Obama has managed to erase everything they fought for. I lost good friends in Iraq and Afghanistan. Part of me feels lucky I did not have to go to war, and part of me feels guilty having friends that did. Best just to let that ####### go and move on.

Sounds delicious.

Pointing out spelling errors and poor reading comprehension will get you reported. It's easier to report rather than learn how to spell and comprehend what you read.

My wife was asking, what's so funny

Ok I made a typo typed meal instead of Medal or maybe spell check got me, not sure which. I am not going to edit it, because I think it's funny, and Penny's response was hilarious., and I can laugh at myself. Of course I find you funny also.

The whole jealous thing and constant comprehension insult thing to cover up you inability to use logic to formulate a response does make me laugh

Anyway.. Peace dude. No mood to spar with you this morning.. Have fun

Yeah, jealousy is what it's all about. laughing.gif

I care not, why or who you respond to. You have a very over inflated view of yourself.

I read this last week. I /salute them. It's better later than never, although most of those awarded will be done so posthumously.

In particular to this subject matter, I have the utmost respect for those servicemen of color who have served for this nation. Often they fought for the rights and freedoms of non Americans, while returning home and not enjoying those same rights. Too often has history glossed over the contributions of African Americans, Jewish Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans who served their country honorably in the face of hatred and being treated as less of a human being.

So while some people in this thread may discount their contributions, I point to the Japanese man who served this nation while his family was jailed in an internment camp during WW2. The African American serviceman who fought during the Civil War knowing that he would receive no quarters if caught but execution.

Sure we can't change history but we can recognize mistakes that were made and honor those who made sacrifices for all of us.

That's nice but that is not what this article is about.

Are we saying that those military didn't deserve the honor?

I am saying that when you go back and review cases based on race or religion to try and find people who you think may could deserve the medal of Honor, you are going to find them

I am sure there are thousands of Silver star and DSC winners that could have gone to the CMOH . To make race a review criteria is racism and cheapens the reward.

Want to review. Fine review all cases. There is no magic measurement that makes it CMOH.

for Obama to say these people did not get the CMOH because of Racism is stupidity. Does he have any proof of that. Does it say somewhere in the award, "Yeah he would have gotten the CMOH, but he is a N word." Such BS

Liberal stupidity continues to define people of color as separate and diffident while screaming they be treated the same

That is not an issue for me. Distracting from an impotent foreign policy is, especially when you trivialize the sacrifices of so many of those that did what the politicians and armchair generals asked them to do.

And conservative feelings are the reason this ####### happens. You got folks that gave their lives for a country that didn't even treat them as human beings, it's about time.

I know this may be hard for you to comprehend, but racism really has nothing to do with the N word as much as it is an institutional practice. Due to the institutionalized form of racism in the military, many people were not recognized to receive the CMOH because of their ethnicity.

In 2002, Congress called for a review of war records from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War to ensure that deserving the Medal of Honor were not denied because of prejudice. The act worked to reveal a number of deserving candidates. Of the 3,464 Medals of Honor awarded, just 88 have been given to 87 individual black Americans. William Carney was the first in 1900.

Congress was controlled by the Republicans in 2002. So does that shoot down your "liberal stupidity" claim?

Really is adding 3 more Blacks going to "cheapen the reward" ? God I'd hate to think how you treated the Black women you claim to have dated. What did you consider buying them a hamburger reparations?
