Hi all,

I recently moved from NY to Mississippi. I currently have about 2 weeks until I am eligible to have my conditions lifted.

When I went to the MS DMV to get a new driver's license they asked for my SS card, old license, and proof of home address. When the lady saw that my SS card had "Valid only for work with DHS approval" on it, she asked for my Green card. I didn't have it with me.

First, does she need the Green card? If my SS card looked just like my husband's with nothing else printed on it she would have just processed my driver's license as if I were a US citizen. Does everyone else's SS card have the "Valid only" clause on it?

Also, I remember when I first came to the US the DMV gave us a hard time getting a driver's license because there was less than 1 year on my K1 visa. We got around this thanks to you guys. Will this also be the case with my Green card. The Green card expires in just over 3 months. I can't get another one now as my lifting of conditions timeframe is still a couple weeks away. What are everyone's though on this?

The DMV here is located in Lauderdale county Mississippi.

Thanks!!

In NJ they are very strict. They always ask for green card or EAD and they only give license valid for 3 months more than the expiration date of the document you show. They verify that the SSN number matches the name even before you reach the window.

I got a first license valid for 9 months (interim EAD's expiration date plus 3 months), I renewed when I got the 2 yrs GC and this one will expire again in 6 months (2 yrs GC expiration date plus 3 months). My license has a note saying "Temp Immi Status" because they don't consider the 2 yrs GC as a regular GC.

I am afraid they will not renew it without the 10 yrs green card.

You should have gone and requested a new SSN card when you got your Greencard.... the new SSN card will not have any restrictions on it...

Kez

Are you sure about that? I was waiting for the 10 yrs one to go and request a new SS card. I thought that since DMV doesn't consider the 2 yrs GC as a real permanent GC, the SSN office wouldn't either.

Yes I am sure.... as soon as you get your 2 year greencard you can have the retriction removed... you do not have to wait until you have the 10 year card... I went the day after I got the 2 year card and I had the new SSN card with 2 weeks...

If you read the guide it tells you this is what you should do...

Did they change your SSN? Hubby told me I should wait just in case I go and they change my number and I am in the middle of removing the conditions...

They will not change your SS number. What you have now is yours for life. They will just issue a new card without the restriction on it.

When I got my 2 year GC, I got my SSN too a few days after that. It was an unrestricted SSN (did not have anything like "valid for employment only with DHS authorization" on it).

I then went to the DMV and they issued me a license without any problems. The only thing is that the expiration date on the driver's license is the same as the expiration date on the 2 year GC. Both expire in a few months. So when I get my I-797 NOA (for the I-751), I will go to the DMV's office again to get it renewed. I suspect they will renew it only for a year corresponding to the expiration date of the NOA.

Is it different from state to state or our DMV made a mistake ? My wife's driver's license is valid for 6 years - way longer than her conditional GC. We are in Indiana.

In CO you get a 'normal' Drivers License with a GC.

If you are using EAD or anything else then it will be issued to the expiry of your current status.

In Oregon you don't have to provide a Social Security card or a green card, as long as you have 3 alternate ID that they accept. Lucky for us!
