Hello everyone!

I'll be beginning my journey to the US on my recently approved K-1 Visa during the first week of March.

Has anyone else purchased some sort of travel insurance to get them through until they are married and added to the USCs insurance?

Thanks in advance!

We'll all have a different opinion on it. I personally risked it for <2 weeks with none - could have gone crummy for me but it didn't. Just have to decide how you feel about it and then either get temporary insurance or not. I suspect there aren't many companies willing to do a short term but you'd have to look into it.

I know that at our Doctor's office an average appointment is $114 -$150-ish so if you had to pay that out of pocket because you had an earache/ strep and then had to pick up a prescription for anibiotics it wouldn't break the bank.

I'm sure there are companies that do it..just be honest about ur situation. Sure it may suck forking out the $$$$, but hospitals are NOT cheap. And if you don't have insurance, you pay a lot more than what the insurance company would pay in the same situation! I only mention that, as a few years back an American was all ticked off that his hospital bill for some type of heart surgery was like $200,000, but if he had insurance, they would have only billed the insurance company, like $50,000--he thought that was so unfair. Hospital care in the USA is a $$$$ making venture for most hospitals.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I went without insurance from June to January. Couldn't even sign up until November. US government apparently doesn't think that immigrating is life changing enough to add someone to insurance. ROFL

That is a shame one would think that would be the case. Luckily enough though marriage is normally a qualifying life changing to add someone.

Yeah too bad that doesn't help someone when a) they got the job after getting married and b) the married person isn't in the USA. :) There was no need for my husband to put me on insurance when we had no idea how long immigration would take. That's just money down the drain, if they would have even let me go on the insurance when I didn't live in the USA.

I didn't worry about it too much, just was careful. The good part about him working for the gov't is that the insurance is significantly cheaper than it would be otherwise. People at my work pay half of their pay checks into insurance. I don't know how they live off the rest honestly.

Make sure you get short term health insurance, not travel insurance. You will establish residency in the U.S. the moment you activate the K1, you would not be considered a traveler.
