Fury amongst gay rights groups as Arizona passes bill allowing people to refuse service to anyone under religious beliefs

Arizona has become the first state in America to pass legislation allowing people and businesses to refuse to work with or serve gays if their religion forbids or disapproves of homosexuality.

The Democrat opposition called the proposal 'state-sanctioned discrimination' and an embarrassment and claimed that it would hurt the economy.

'This bill is about going after the rights of the LGBT community in Arizona,' said Representative Chad Campbell, the leader of the Democrat opposition. 'This is going to be horrible for our economy.'

Arizona Governor Fears Government Regulation Could Ruin Bigotry and Hatred

PHOENIX — Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said today that she was reluctant to sign an anti-gay “religious freedom” bill passed by the Arizona state legislature this week, telling reporters, “I believe that bigotry and hatred should be free of government regulation.”

She said that while many Arizona business owners currently enjoy employing hateful practices, “I worry that if big government gets involved, that’ll ruin everything.”

“Don’t get me wrong—I think the anti-gay bill that the legislature passed was well-meaning,” she said. “All I’m saying is, let’s leave it to the private sector.”

Offering an example, she added, “Look at how Obamacare has messed up health care. I’d hate to pass a new law that results in government wrecking bigotry.”

But Governor Brewer got some pushback today from Republican legislator Harland Dorrinson, who told reporters, "I’m as opposed to big government as anyone. But promoting hate-based bias is one area where I believe government has an important role to play.”

For her part, Governor Brewer remains unconvinced by that argument. Noting that the current system of hatred and bigotry in place in Arizona has worked well for decades, she said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

One day, you might post a real article. And you know something? People will still disregard it as misplaced, unfunny satire.

Not that anything in American politics is remotely funny, anyway. ;)

Sadly enough, that's pretty much what this bill is doing.

There's nothing in any religious texts that says not to serve someone because you don't agree with their lifestyle choices. You're not conforming nor condoning their actions by serving them food or any other services. It's just another way to discriminate against someone.

Exactly. There is no religion that suggests that contact with gays is a sin. It's not catching, you can't catch gay by taking their money in exchange for goods or services.

If I were religious these people would offend me with their hateful interpretation of religious law.

If their is anyone on these boards that agrees with the law, can they please explain why homosexuals deserve this treatment? What is different about the sin of gay as apposed to all the other sins that people commit? Are these people going to stop serving adulterers, murderers, thieves, gluttons and those who covert?

That's right. In satire, there's always a fair amount of truth. And that truth appears to hurt some.

This country was founded on Christian principles. Folks have a clear concept of what they think is acceptable. You can't tell who's a murderer, adulterer, or a thief by looking at them. But gays? Almost the same as being a minority. You can't hide that.

Are we saying that bigotry is a Christian principle?

No, but gays are rejected by most religions. It's not right, love the sinner, not the sin. Yet folks get that part confused. So it's easier to just hate and shun them.

Not by Christians. Jesus would not reject gays. He would not cast a stone. If Christianity is build on the teachings of Christ, then how can Christians reject gays? They can't and won't. Bigots on the other hand, most certainly would.

It's bigotry hidden behind the skirts of the church, they are cowards and not very nice people.

So you can tell who is gay and not by looking at them? Really?

I thought you told me you can't judge someone by looking at them

You shouldn't. But folks still do it.
