i just got married to a green card holder in my country, Ghana and before then i had taken a five years visa to the united states and have even gone there twice, i want to know whether i can change my status there when i go to visit my wife next month

Entering the US on a visitor visa with the intention to immigrate is fraudulent.

November 14th, 2013: She's here!

December 12th, 2013: Picked up marriage license.

December 14th, 2013: Wedding

Has your spouse even filed an I130 for you ? As the spouse of a green card hold you normally can NOT adjust status because there is no visa number immediately available for you. Your wait for a visa can be years. There was a brief time last year where there was an immediate number but that has past. A USC's spouse has an immediate number available so their case is different. Also there is no forgiveness on any overstaying for you. All you can do is visit and leave per the terms of your visa.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

No you can't as entering on non-immigrant visa and planning to remain is illegal. And also, visa number is NOT immediately available for immediate family members of LPRs and time in overstay is NOT forgiven - ie, you'd get kicked out of the country and get a ban for overstay.

Go visit your wife, go back to Ghana and wait out the regular immigrant visa process - around 2 yrs wait.

Spouse is a LPR .... NOT a USC.. Ignoring the "intent" issue.... No visa is available immediately so no adjustment of status is allowed.... Re-think your plans...

03/21/2009 - I-130 Mailed to Chicago lockbox

11-30-09: GOT GREEN CARD in mail!!!!!!

Citizenship Process;

1/11/2013: Mailed N400 to Dallas Texas

3/11/2013: interview.. Approved

4/4/2013. : Oath! Now a U.S. citizen!

Totally wrong - he is a spouse of LPR - there is no changing status for him as 1. the overstay is not forgiven to LPR family members, 2. visa number is not immediately available and 3. he DIDN'T marry a USC.

April 22, 2011: Mailed I-130 to Chicago
April 28, 2011: Received NOA1 via text/email, file routed to CSC (priority date April 25th)
April 29, 2011: Updated
May 3, 2011: Received NOA1 hardcopy in mail
July 26, 2011: Received NOA2 via text/email!!!
July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal
