I don't know where else to put this. My wife has a relative (in law) that apparently has a case number for an immigration diversity visa as best I can tell from what she says.....

As far as I know he's on the list for Ethiopia, has a case number and is possibly awaiting an interview at the consulate in Addis Ababa.

I have the case number.

Does anyone know of a way to aquire status based on this case number?

Thanks

Ten years ago a friend of my cousin in Belarus won the visa lottery. The father and his sons stayed at my house for several months until they got established and settled here. I cannot recall the details, but they were personally contacted by the US embassy and the instructions were quite clear as to what they needed to do.

They interviewed at the US embassy in Warsaw, Poland and were given all necessary documents to enter the USA. I can't recall if they entered the USA with Green Cards or if they were issued them after arriving.

I'm sure you can Google up the official US State Department link to read about the details of the 2007 US Diversity Visa Lottery. There are lots of rip off websites that try to make a buck off of it, but it costs nothing to register on the official US State Department site and all the instructions are there.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Not all initial winners get to complete the process. The State Dept. initially draws more winners than it has visa available. That is because the State Dept. wants to maximize the use of the available visa numbers and clearly, some applicants that are drawn will not qualify for the visa or may not wish to pursue it while yet others never get the actual visa application returned on time, etc. Not sure how many extras they draw but some winners will never see the inside of the US Consulate whether through fault of their own or just because they were too far on the back end of the line and the 55,000 visa have been issued prior to their number coming up. Nani's cousin made that latter experience firsthand a couple of years ago.

There is no way I am aware of to check the status of the application that all initial winners send back. It's a wait and see type deal. Folks in Ethiopia know this all too well - I bet you anything that your wife has a number of friends and/or relatives - however distant - that have gone through this process and come to the US on a DV. Everyone there knows how it works. They know it better than you and I ever will. They're just thinking (and probably hoping) that you may be able to get some info that they can't.

Thanks. I did some reading about the DV process. There's really no way that I can tell where this guy's at in the process but one more bit of info I gleened from her (my wife) is that apparently he's awaiting a security clearance......

Does this make sense, and if so does this mean he's one of the "chosen ones"?

Not sure but it seems encouraging if he is processed for sec clearance. I doubt they do that for all intial winners.

ET. Do you know what the process is, e.g., they submit the paperwork, get notification(s)?, wait for approval, security clearance, etc.?

I want to make sure I understand exactly where they're at in the process before I say anything. Life would be so much easier if they knew how to use a computer or fax machine.........

The process is that you get notified that your name was drawn. This notification includes instructions to complete and return the visa application package. From there it's sit and wait to receive an interview notice with instructions to gather certain documentation needed for the visa processing at the Consulate as well asw ith instructions to get the police and medical check done. Then there's the interview and that concludes the process.

Again, a number of folks that get notified and return their application never hear from the US authorities again because they are either disqualified by what they returned in terms of their application package or they are too far back in line to be considered any further. There is, as far as I know, no notification if one falls off the wagon.

Thanks...Now I know what to ask of them...
