I have little doubt that nugent believes it.

It's just because he's rich and, in certain circles, famous that he has the luxury of a public platform to express his views. It doesn't mean that his views have any significance of reflect the general balance of opinion among the general public.

Ted was a guest for Wendy Davis opponent in the Texas governor race, I forgot his name. He also played at governor Rick Perry inauguration. He also stirred up controversy a couple of years ago when he was a guest of some Republican at the POTUS State of the Union address.
