Sorry not sure where to post this.

So my husband got his visa and hes planning his trip from Amman, Jordan to Detroit, Michigan. The problem is that they will have a technical stop in Canada but Ive heard youre not allowed to be in canada without a greencard even if its jst for transit. Is this true? hes not going into Canada but it jst may be a stop where they get off to rest in the airport. Is this fine?

Best place to ask first is your airline. Tell them the cirsumstances, Jordan passport with immigrant visa for the US.

Because it is a technical stop, basically means they are stopping to refuel the aircraft, your husband and all other passengers could very well remain on board the aircraft while refuealing is happening. If they remain on the aircraft, a transit visa might not be needed.

Worse scenario is that he will have to be issued a transit visa for Canada by the Canadian embassy. It shouldn't be difficult at all as he has a US immigrant visa already in his passport.

I did a quick google search because I was curious. My wife also needs a visa for Canada and I've always turned down flights transiting Canada.

I found this: http://www.international.gc.ca/protocol-protocole/circular-note_note-circulaire_xdv-0094_Temporary_resident_visas-Visas_residence_temporaire.aspx

It looks like a technical stop is the same as a transit stop as for as they are concerned. The interesting point is:

This note serves to remind that since June 28, 2002, under Section 16(1) of Canada=s Immigration Refugee Protection Act, every person entering or landing in Canada from countries requiring visas to visit, must hold a valid Canadian temporary resident visa, even for a brief technical/refuelling and commercial transit stop. The exception to this would be if the travellers have either departed directly from the USA, or are en route to the USA and are in possession of a visa to enter the USA.

It seems a visa would not be required since he will be holding a visa to enter the USA. Of course you should double check with the airline and perhaps have him call the Canadian consulate in Jordan and verify.

This just happened to my fiancé today! He booked his ticket on Emirates coming from Dubai and had a stop in Toronto, Canada (he was supposed to switch planes with a different airline). They stopped him either when he was checking in or heading through security. They told him that he needed a Canadian visa, even though he was in transit. I thought that was the most ridiculous thing, ever! But, rules are rules....

So, instead of him arriving this evening, he had to switch flights so that he flies into JFK. He does have one stop in Milan, Italy but he is not getting off the plane. The person changing his ticket said it would not be a problem as he would be in transit and is not getting off the plane. I also looked this up to make sure it was true and it stated that he would not need a visa in that country if he was in transit and could prove by showing his ticket.
