Can't find where it has information on the expire date for the EAD card. If I apply for it separate from my AOS package, does the doc last only a few months? I want to apply for it now and AOS later.

If you apply for it before AOS-ing, the EAD will only be valid for the same period as the I-94, i.e. 90 days from the time he arrived in the US. Bear in mind it takes about 90 days to get approved for and receive the EAD in the first place, so there is not much point in applying for it. If working is really important, you should AOS right away and send in the forms for EAD and AP as well. If you can't send in AOS now because of a lack of funds (just hypothesising here) then you'd be better off saving the money for AOS and waiting a bit longer to work.

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!

EAD's are good for 1 years, if applied for after the I-94 expires, as stated on the card.

To add, you can only get a 1-year EAD when you apply with or after AOS. Applying for the EAD with or after AOS is free. If you apply for the EAD before your AOS, you have to pay the fee AND it expires when the I-94 expires, essentially making it a waste of money.

Applying for the EAD:

If you want to apply for an EAD before you file for your AOS, you can only apply while your I-94 is still valid...meaning it is not expired. You will be filing based on your admission as a K-1 visa holder, and you will be required to pay a fee of $380. It takes between 2 and 3 months to receive your EAD based on a K-1 visa. It will expire with your I-94. This means if you filed for your EAD right after your arrival to the US, you would have maybe 2 weeks of work authorization, because your I-94 (and EAD) would have expired. If you file for an EAD a month after your arrival, if it is approved, you would likely receive an already expired EAD card. Its basically a waste of $380.

If you want to apply for an EAD after filing for AOS, your filing will be based on an adjustment applicant, the fee is waived, and the EAD is valid for one year. This is the better option.
