Hi everyone,

I just want to ask after getting married ofcourse woman change their name. my question is which middle name should we use? do we need to use our last name when we're not yet married or use whatever our middle name before? ex. Maiden name: mary Johnson smith. Married name: mary smith black or mary Johnson black? I asked because iv seen a conversation regarding that, during their biometrics or interview I cant remember, she was told that her middle name on her married name should be the same middlename that she had on her maiden name. then I saw some comments they said that no one told them about it so they used their lastname before as their middle name on their married name... do u have any idea regarding that matter? SORRY for making you guys confuse. thanks

In most states, whichever way you want your name to be, that is how you write it in the marriage license and that carries (again in most states) the weight of a legal name change. You can then use that to obtain other documents/identification cards, etc.

You have to check your own state laws, one way to find out is when you get the marriage license.

The only thing you need to be careful of is the sequence of how you get documents; in a number of states the MVD will have some rule about how your name is in the id (as in Texas, pain in the rear), I'd leave that for after you have your govenment issue EAD/GC, but I'd check the MVD first. Again in TX, they wanted to do something really odd, so we showed up with the EAD and they had no choice but to follow what the government document said.

The way we did it was: marriage first, then SSN, then after EAD came in, driver's license. Starting in the marriage license, we wrote how we wanted the name to be.

We did the bank somewhere in between with passport, and change it to what the state id was later, not a biggy; credit cards and such you pretty much change it whenever, don't need to show anything

Yea when i got my ead and advance parole and my ssn it was lorna tolentino smith and then when my interview came and i passed, my io told me that my name will be like this..lorna alcantara smith for my green card. When i got my green card i went to ssn to have my name corrected because i had a problem when i started to work, the ssn that i gave does not match my name which because i use tolentino smith. Just correct it when you pass the interview and just tell the officer that in the philippines, this is how a married woman takes her husbands name.they probably have a lot of this going on.
