tracfone, Net10, straight talk. There are plenty of cheap burner phones available in the US.

All on the major carrier networks.

I only know the term 'burner' from TV! Aren't they disposable phones?

Republic Wireless is CDMA, not sufficiently familiar with Sim offerings

You need to check that you phone will work with a US SIM and focus on BYO plans.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I've had to do some research on this myself as I also moved here with an unlocked phone. I was with T-mobile for a while and have not had any problems with them. Their cheapest offering is the 35$ unlimited web/text and 100 talk minutes. This promo is available for sim cards bought (with new activation codes) at Walmart.

Another option is Ting wireless. No contract plans for as low as $21 and a BYOD promo. The only down side is that it operates under the Sprint network.

https://ting.com

Virgin Mobile also has a $35/mo plan with unlimited data/text and 300 talk hours. Though, I don't think they have a BYOD promo which means you will have to purchase one of their handsets.

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

Burner phones. Yup disposable. My wife got a basic phone for $7 on tracfone. Drops $10 a month onto it, gives her 100 minutes.

At the other end of the spectrum you can buy Apple 5s on Straight talk. about $600. And for $45 a month you get Unlimited talk and text. 2.5G of data then your speed get throttled untill the 30day period is over and you pay another $45 for another month. data speed is then restored.

Pays your money, takes your choice....

Anyone have any experience with Ting? Looks decent since my usage will be super low to begin with.

I've a friend that shifted her whole family over to Ting. She says it's pretty decent but can be unreliable at times. It depends where you live. It piggybacks on the Sprint network so if Sprint sucks in your area, you can pretty much expect Ting to suck too. But it is pretty good value. You pay for what you consume, no bells and whistles.

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

My wife and I have been using Ting for about 4 months now, and we LOVE it! We bought 2 used iPhone 4s's on ebay, got them set up, and our bill is only $39 per month (for both of us!)

Ting actually roams on Verizon's voice network, so you are never without voice! It's great! No data roaming though yet.

If you want to save $25 when signing up, feel free to use this link: https://ting.com/r/irlssj0259
