Hello,

My grandparents are arriving to the US (Chicago, IL) from Pakistan in May 2014 on an IR-5 visa. From what little I know, they should get their SSN and Green Card in the mail a few weeks after.

According to Canadian Immigration (CIC), a US resident with Green Card does not require a visitor visa to enter Canada.

I am afraid their Green Card won't arrive in time for them to attend my wedding in June (in Canada). Does any one know what the status of their IR-5 would be in those few weeks prior to getting their Green Card? Do they have a temporary stamp of "some sort" indicating their residency status in the US? Does the IR-5 visa evolve in to something else when they land in the US?

As a measure of last resort, I could apply for a TRV (visitor visa) on their behalf to Canada on their Pakistani passport, but that is expensive and can be a very lengthy process given they are *drum roll* Pakistani.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

SA

Thanks @aaron2020. I did a little more research and found the same i.e. they can enter Canada with an I-551 stamp. Next question: Does everyone arriving with an IR-5 visa get a I-551 stamp at POE? Do we have to apply for it afterwards? Can you enter Canada with I-551 with a Pakistani passport (emphasis on 'Pakistani')?
