Hi,

I am planning to attend the programming (or coding) contest conducted by one of the company in US & their anniversary celebration with full expense sponsor. But i am totally confused to select the correct visa type ( B1 ? or B2 ? ) required for my travel. Please help me.

Tourism and Visit (B-2):
  • tourism
  • vacation (holiday)
  • visit with friends or relatives
  • medical treatment
  • participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
Business (B-1):
  • consult with business associates
  • attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference.

Thanks

It really doesn't matter, especially for a Canadian citizen because they don't need to apply for a B visa. just show up at the point of entry and state your reason for coming to the US. They will either approve or disapprove your entry based on your reason for coming to the US and your ties to Canada that show you will return when your trip is done.

Good Luck.

I'm not Canadian citizen. I'm international student doing masters here. I need to select a type of visa (either B1 or B2) in DS-160 form.

Thanks

You should have the flag that represents the citizenship of the person filing for a visa or immigration benefits in your profile, not the Canadian flag.

If you're not performing work for a company and are not receiving any financial compensation for your visit, then B2.
