How or why does a file transfer? Is it good or bad?

Hey guys!

I was looking at how cases transferred to California seem to (at least recently), be moving quicker than Texas. My question is: How does a file transfer from Texas to California? Is it based on what country your fiancee is from? Is it just based on how many files Texas can receive on a given day? Or is it just luck? I was just curious, because my fiancee and I's file is in Texas (he is from Romania), and another Romanian filed his in Texas and it got transferred to California. Another question is, will USCIS notify you if your file did, in fact, get transferred? Thanks for helping answer these questions. Good luck to all!

Mmmm, that wouldn't make sense. I live in Connecticut, so I would think my file would be transferred to Vermont (2 states away from mine), instead of still at Texas.

Mmmm, that wouldn't make sense. I live in Connecticut, so I would think my file would be transferred to Vermont (2 states away from mine), instead of still at Texas.

Vermont doesn't handle K1s anymore. It's either Califonia or Texas.

...and it doesn't have anything to do with where the USC lives, or where you're planning on living once you get the visa... it's called "workload balancing" and it's completely random. They send files to whichever center has the least files at the moment. The idea is to spread everything out so that they can be processed faster.

It doesn't necessarily work all that well, but...

Everyone files to Texas lockbox and then the files are diverted to the Service Centers based on which state you live in

Doesn't really work like that. All K1 filers send their petitions to the Texas lockbox. However the service centre that your petition gets sent to isn't necessarily your home state. There are 4 service centres but not all of them process K1 petitions. Centres that process K1 petitions are California, Texas and Vermont

As other members have mentioned, files get sent not to your home state or the closest state to you, but to where the workload is less for K1 petitions. Politically correct term, 'balancing workload'.
