Bank Issue

we just went into wells fargo and said we want his account to be a joint account witth myself, showed her my passport signed a couple things and easy peasy done.

I had no problems adding my husband to my chase account - they used the passport number. the only issues that up were that the system did not like the foreign address, but it was ok because we just used my address in the states. He misplaced/lost the debit card when he was in Canada, and it ended up being more time consuming to get him a new card. He had to request a new card, but they couldn't send it to his Canadian address. So they sent it to me and then I sent it to him.

Ok so I've read several posts that we are able to open a bank account without a ssn. So I went to BOA today and was told by the rep that if I did not have a ssn then I would need a itin# or a valid visa inorder for my husband and I to open a joint bank account. Does anyone have any recommendation for me, I'm not sure what to do or do I just need to go to another bank.

Most Banks will not let you add a spouse without a SS#. I had the same issue.

I was able to put my wife on my Raymond James Brokerage Account.

My Local Representative Called the RJ's Main Office and explained the situation and they added her.

You might have to shop around to find a Bank that will do it for you.

Also, I added my wife and son to company health insurance without SS#

Wow!!! Thanks guys I will absolutely go to another bank...I found it so strange this rep was searching through my passport asking for my visa lol I felt like I was at an immigration office. Then she said I would need a ITIN #

It's easier to add a spouse/fiancee to an existing account. If you do not have an SSN or an ITIN, you will fill out a W8-BEN form. It is TOTALLY possible to open an account with a US Citizen. Next time, try to get a higher-ranked person, and know to ask for a W8-BEN form if they start pushing back.

The W8-BEN form is good for two years. After you get your SSN, you will come back in to the bank and update the records.

That is weird because in my state I have had many foreign friends who opened an account at BOA without owing a soc. sec. card. I guess even the same bank does different things in each state.......
