I hope I am note posting this in the wrong forum. I'm sure I will soon be moved if I am...

I have now booked my one-way flight to JFK (£995?! Lucky I had lots of air miles saved up...) for 30th March. We are planning to get married soon after 19th April when my fiancee's mother gets back from a trip to China and my parents get in from the UK.

I know that this varies state to state (if anyone has experience of this in New York City please let me know! We want to get married in City Hall.) but how/when can can we get a marriage license? How long does one last when you get it? Could my fiancee go and get it before I get across there to save time?

Sorry cant help you about the marriage license but why did you buy a one way ticket when return tickets are cheaper.

Just cancel the return half when you get there,

Thank you, goodnight and may your gods go with you",

I cant help you about marriage licences either, but the person who posted about the price of a ticket has a point. If it's cheaper to get a round trip ticket then that would be the best option. Funnily enough I have just been looking at prices myself and I looked on BA's site, which said if you cancel within 24 hours you can get a full refund and then rebook. Hopefully you have only just booked and have the option then to get a cheaper ticket.

Hi, I got married in Manhattan.

You can get a license as soon as you arrive in the states, you don't need a SSN or anything else.

Take your passports with you. Fill out a form which is available online or you can do it there. I'd advise you to do it at home so that you don't end up waiting too long there. You must both be present to get a license. I think the license is valid for 60 days (please double check)

There will be a que to get into the que to get a lience. Sometimes its long, we waited about an hour for the first que and about 10 mins for the second to see the clerk. The clerk takes your fee, your application number and passports. Then gives you a license. Done.

You can come back 24 hours later to get married and swap your licence for a marriage certificate. We got married around Xmas, the que to get married was about 3 hours. We waited probably 4hrs. The ceremony itself lasts 5 mins max. NYC is very very busy, with 100s of couples waiting. Perhaps we got caught in the Xmas rush, but I would advise you to que up when office opens.

Let me know if you have any other particular questions and I'll be happy to answer.

Good luck and congrats!

We went down to the city hall on a Friday, applied for a marriage licence. Take your passport with you. Fill out a form which is available online or you can do it there. I'd advise you to do it at home so that you don't end up waiting too long there.
