I may be ahead of myself, but I just wanted to gather up the details for my parents.

I am a Canadian citizen and I am marrying a USC under a K1 visa. I understand that after the AOS, that it will be 3 years before I can apply for naturalization. My parents have always thought they would retire and buy a condo in Arizona or somewhere hot, spending a few months out of the year away from the cold.

Now that I have plans to move to the US (specifically California) they are thinking of being closer. Under Canadian and US agreement, my parents can stay in the US for 180 days every 365 days without a visa - which was all they ever needed if they were retiring part-time and I was in Canada. But now that I am moving countries, we're trying to see what we should do in the distant (but almost near) future. Eventually, my parents will be of age where they'll need extra help. I grew up with my grandparents, because my parents moved them in when they were unable to take care and live on their own. I would like to do the same.

Although, I have some retirement in Canada, I still have many years of work ahead of me (I am in my late 20's). So I can build up my retirement in the US with my husband. My parents on the other hand will be starting to seriously consider retiring in the next 5 or so years. What would happen to their RRSP?

I'm trying to see what our best options for my parents will be… eventually I will need to take care of them, but would that mean sacrificing their retirement savings in Canada just so I can keep a closer eye on them?

Any help is appreciated.

I believe your RRSP question is Canadian specific. They will continue keeping on keeping on until you decide what to do with them. You will have to end up paying taxes on it. I suggest you get them transferred to a US retirement plan like a 401K. A lot of banks, TD, RBC, etc, have American branches so transfer is easy.

But that is really a question for your bank.

good luck
