In the UK everyone is entitled to paid vacation leave so long as they have more than a 0 hour contract (usually get around 4 weeks paid a year) and its encouraged to mention any vacation plans at interview without having to worry about not getting job because of it, im led to believe in the US it is nothing like this and not only are you not entitled to vacation leave as a law but also you generally get half or less of the UK entitlement if any. My question really is I will probably get my EAD around mid april, we have our honeymoon booked for June and im wondering what peoples advice is on looking for a job in april is, should I mention vacation in june? or will that completely ruin my chances of getting a job? and is it considered really bad play to need vacation leave so soon into employment? or would people even say that it just too soon n I should wait til after honeymoon to get a job? (hope this not the case as we could use the money)

Wait until you get a job offer, then when you are negotiating your offer, you mention that you have holiday plans already for XX date. I have started plenty of jobs with vacation plans already made shortly after intended start date.

Also, your vacation time depends on the type of job you have. What line of work are you looking in to?

I will be looking for a job in animal care so mostly veterinary technician or staff positions in animal charities but itl be a case of whoever will have me to begin with as we need the money so I imagine i'll find myself working in retail, restaurant or admin to begin with.

Generally for less professional jobs the standard is 2 weeks paid vacation in addition to the Federal holidays, which I know is not a lot. But for more professional/specialist jobs, many people have more vacation time. If you plan on changing jobs somewhat, a good time to get vacation time in is in between jobs :) Though, those times are obviously unpaid.

Good luck on finding work! Make sure you turn your UK CV into a US-standard resume!

The US has no laws about vacation time. Vacation time is set by the employer or negotiated with the employer.

Generally, when an employer starts a job, the employer has zero vacation hours. As the employee works, the employee will accumulate vacation hours. With 2 months of work, you could expect to accrue 2-3 days of vacation hours at best.

How you go about telling an employer is going to be tricky since the employer does not have to make an allowance for you to take time off for a vacation.

As an employer, it is completely within my rights to not hire a person who tells me before taking the job that he needs a vacation or to terminate an employee who does not show up when permission for a vacation was not given. I would make an exception if I really wanted the person (which does happens).

My advice is to be up front with any prospective employer. Don't have to disclose it at the interview. But you should inform the employer as soon as you get an offer.

I am sure it varies a lot from place to place. I only got 2 weeks'vacation even for a professional position. They were extremely inflexible about negotiating vacation time. They actually ended up giving me an additional $3000/year instead of giving me the additional vacation I was asking for. My boss was really understanding though. I needed to take a few days off almost immediately due to previous plans. He said I could "work from home" those days :-). I did end up working 300+ hours of overtime that first year though. Roughly 80 of those were unpaid, so the company came out ahead anyway.
