No need for him to be present. He can if he wants to but again not needed. :) It does help but not necessarily a guarantee of an approval. An F2A should be fine without the petitioner unless there are complications that will need presence of petitoner. :)

I flew down to be with my wife during the interview. I was not allowed to enter the consulate since they allowed only ones with the I/L but CO was impressed with my wife that i flew down for the interview and was waiting outside the consulate. Infact CO did not ask too many questions after he knew i flew down. So it is always good if the petitioner comes down and does give some weight about your relationship with the petitioner to the CO.
