Hello VJers, my fiance was approved this week and we are just starting to plan our small civil ceremony for when he arrives. I live in Houston, Texas and according to some googling I did, in order to get a marriage license we need to show or have memorized our SSNs. I read somewhere on VJ that you can get a SSN 2 weeks after you land by showing your I-94 Copy then it takes 2 weeks to get the card in the mail. Am I missing something? Will that SSN card be enough to get the marriage license?

The I-94 is automated now and you print out your I-94 info from online > https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

Since it is automated, you do not have to wait 2 weeks for your info to show up in the system anymore. So, you should be able to print out your I-94 info and go apply for the SSN as soon as you wish to.

However, you do not have to have an SSN to get a marriage license. It is required to have the SSN if you already have one. For non-residents without an SSN, you let the court clerk know and ask what else is accepted in place of the SSN. They usually use the foreign passport in such cases.

In TX, photo ID (passport) is enough to get a marriage license. You the citizen can show a driver license or passport and fill in you SSN from memory on the application. If he gets his SSN before you go get the license, then he will give his number also, but it is not required that he has one. There is a 72 hour waiting period between license and marriage.

You can get your license downtown or at any of these branch locations http://www.cclerk.hctx.net/Branch_Locations.aspx

Thank you so much, both of you! This was very helpful!. Nich-Nick, I see you're in Houston (I think) as well, and your spouse is English. My fiance has been wondering if there's any English people around this area to hang out with, he doesn't want to lose his accent (I keep telling him he never will but oh well)

We run into a lot of British people. My husband was pleased to find one working at Lowe's. He said now i can ask where to find a spanner or extractor fan and won't get a blank stare. Also we find many English foods at Kroger...Colman's mustard, Branston pickle, HP sauce, Ribena. Favorite cheese replacement is an HEB store brand called Artisan Cheddar. Cheap tea alternative is Kroger brand called English blend or English breakfast. PG Tips and Typhoo are readily available but at higher prices. And there are two British stores if you really want things you can't find in Kroger. British Isles in Rice Village. Goodwoods in the Woodlands.

I think he has lost a little of the accent in five years. He says "y'all" now too, but it sounds kinda foreign flavored with the way he pronounces it.

Exactly this. In Iowa, the marriage license you apply for says it requires the SSN of both parties. However, if you tell the clerk when you apply that your fiancé does not have an SSN, it is acceptable to leave it blank on the form.
