I was just sticking to the claim that was made and asked for proof. I agree, the Second Amendment gives the right to keep and bear arms. And because some people abuse their rights mine shouldn't be taken away.

Who is asking to have your guns taken away? I have provided links to many of the studies that show how dangerous it is to keep a gun in the home. You don't like them, that's not my problem. The point is simply to educate and get gun owners to reflect, not remove your right to have a gun. If gun owners are really responsible they will acknowledge that having a gun in the home is not a no risk decision. It's a decision fraught with risks that need to be assessed logically and honestly, not brushed under the carpet. My point has always been, have a gun if you genuinely need one, but not because of some ridiculous paranoia that you need one to defend yourself against criminal activity.

I didn't make the claim that anyone was trying to take guns away. You link to studies. Please link to actual statistics. What I like or don't like is irrelevant to the discussion. So a responsible gun owner is one that meets your definition of responsibility? And it's OK by you for someone to own a gun - as long is it's for what you personally consider a valid reason?

Academic studies always have links to the statistics that are used, these are studies by actual academics and are peer reviewed not just some quack opinion by an armchair expert. Once again, if you read and understand the risks, you are not going to buy a gun just for personal protection. It's a matter of fact not opinion.

Yeah, that too. The US has universal suffrage, it's not a dictatorship and despite the ridiculous scaremongering that comes out of some extreme right wing rhetoric, the US dems and Obama are not going to reject the constitution and implement ObamaRule America.

Just out of interest, what do you say about those many millions of US citizens who go through an entire life time without owning a gun and die of old age or disease and not gun shot from a criminal, are they just 'lucky'?

Is this the height of your critical thinking skills? Let's throw this at you. If you do not have a gun in the house you can't be hurt or killed by it, period. Does that induce you to rethink the wisdom of countering my questions with yours?

I'll throw out a new question. Person A is uninterested in guns, has no intention of going to a firing range on a regular basis to practice, is unlikely to keep his gun clean and in working condition and only wants a gun to protect against home invasion. Person A goes to person B for advice. Person B is interested in guns, regularly practices and keeps his guns well maintained. What should person B say to person A? If I was person B, I would tell person A to forget having a gun, it's more likely to add to the risks in their home than protect them from harm. What would you say if you were person B? (let's assume that we already know that it's 'up to them' ;) )

I can sit here all afternoon and my gun will not kill me. Every day for almost my entire life the guns in my house never killed anyone. Why do you fear everything in life?

You quake in fear of a gun so please never own one

What on earth are you talking about? Seriously, there is nothing in what I have said that could possibly lead you to such a conclusion and yet you evade and obfuscate straight forward questions about gun ownership as if scared that taking a stand on something so rational as to whether it's wise to encourage gun ownership amongst people who have no interest in guns in the interests of overall public safety will be frowned upon by gun aficionados. Unbelievable really.

Please provide me a link where the statistics state this. The statistics, not the study. It's not fact at all, there are 300 + million guns in this country and the staggering majority are not used for criminal purposes. But I am certainly open minded and will be happy to look at the statistical evidence, otherwise it is just opinion, not fact.

If what you are stating is your opinion, I respect that even though I disagree.

Do you think that number has anything to do with the U.S. murder rate being higher than just about every other developed country in the world?

I don't think that the 300 million number is the problem. The number of murders in the US has declined while the population and number of guns has increased. There is much more to it than guns, IMO. Obviously if there were no guns there would be no gun deaths but that's never been the case in the US nor do I ever think it will be. I think we need enforcement of the laws we currently have and need to pay a lot more attention to mental health in general. I see it as a very complex problem. When I was a kid, if you got your a$$ kicked in a fight, you shook hands and that was the end of it. No one would have even thought of going home to get dad's gun and shoot your opponent. Something has slowly happened regarding that and it is quite complex.

I'd agree with all of that, except the first part. I do think the fact that there are so many guns in this country plays some role in the high murder rate. How much is hard to say I guess.
