Health / travel insurance short-term dilemma

Hi,

My marriage visa (green card) was just approved and I’m hoping to be arriving in the US next week. So what do I do about insurance? I’m assuming that I’m not valid for travel insurance as such… there's probably some loophole to say “but you weren’t a tourist going away for a month, you have a visa to live there! So your travel insurance is not valid!" During March, I will have to look into health care for my wife and myself during (in time for the deadline at the end of March – assuming that permanent residents as well as citizens are legally obliged to purchase healthcare by the end of March? Well, I want to, anyway, but just wondering what the rules are with regards to permanent residents?). But what to do in the short-term? 30-days travel insurance? Am I still eligible? Any recommendations? Did anyone else have a problem with this?

Thanks!

Have a look at this post: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/452245-insurance-question/#entry6489292

I did some research on the company suggested in the post and they were reasonable.

You will be a permanent resident as soon as you step off the plane next week. You won't have a visa to live here. You will be a greencard holder. Don't get sick. Sign up for something before you unpack. You don't have to wait until the deadline.

Hi ki&si,

Will take a look at the URL now. Thank you!

Hi Kat&Abhi,

Ideally, yes, but my wife doesn’t have insurance through her employment so we need to review the situation, and will do over the month ahead.

Hi Nich-Nick,

Yes, as mentioned above, we need to review the situation carefully, do research and make decisions. Meanwhile, I just need to make sure I am covered in the interim period between arriving and getting something more long-term organised.

PS: Thanks for your help on this forum in the past. Not sure if you saw my acknowledgement on another page. It’s been a particularly difficult, stressful, and at times seemingly endless process, but this forum has made it all possible.
