Good afternoon!!

I have a rather silly question, but this entire process has been so confusing for me. I filed K1 visa, it was approved, my fiance is here and last week we were married!!! YEA!!!!! We are both so very happy after waiting for 1 year...

Now my question.......what next?? He has applied for a social security number, which should be back within 2 weeks. How do we apply for his citizenship? Can/how can we apply for a work permit so he can start work? What about travel? Can he leave the US or must he wait until he is a citizen?

I know it is a lot of questions, but I just need a starting place and this web site has been muy blessing this past year for the K1 process.

Thank you so very much!!!!!!!

First, you need to apply for adjustment of status (AOS). Have a look at the guides here. After he receives his 2 year GC, he will have to file to remove the conditions (ROC) on that GC 90 days before he has been a lawful permanent residence (LPR) for 2 years as indicated by the LPR since date on his GC. If you are still married and he has been a LPR for 3 years or more, he can file for citizenship as long as he meets the other requirements.

I highly recommend you look over the guides here on VJ to see what is expected of you at each stage so you can begin acquiring the proper documentation.

Good luck,

Dave

FYI, you are a long way away from citizenship. Focus on getting his permanent resident status by following the guides.

Make sure she doesn't work or leave the country until the appropriate documents have been obtained

good luck

First of all, congrats! Also, in addition to what everyone has mentioned, consider applying for EAD (Employment Authorization) and AP (Advanced Parole) at the same time you apply for AOS, The guides will be helpful in answering all the questions on how to apply. EAD and AP approval usually comes within 90 days of applying, which means your significant other will be allowed to work and travel upon receiving that card. The AOS will take longer, but it's free to apply for EAD and AP when you apply for AOS, so it's totally worth doing.
