  1. 1. If statehood advocates say PR should get statehood so they can get more aid from the federal government...

    • That makes me a lot less likely to be supportive. Sounds like they want to be leeches.
    • That makes me a lot more likely to be supportive. Fair is fair and colonialism is not fair.
  2. 2. Should Republicans get behind this as well?

    • Yes. Republicans should get behind this because it is the right thing to do.
    • No. Republicans should protect the English-speaking status of this nation. We all know the Democrats won't.
    • Yes. Republicans should get behind this because it is inevitable and we need people who actually love America (Democrats don't, well known fact) influencing the process.
  3. 3. If this bill passes, PR will have to vote on statehood. Let's say they pick independence instead and an independent PR allies with American adversaries like Cuba and North Korea/China (same thing, yeah?)...

    • I would be comfortable with that because that was their choice.
    • Then I would regret that we ever asked them at all.
    • That's fine. I'm sure Langley could use a near-shore location for some drone testing. AfPak is so far away.

And what of the fact that everyone alive today who was born in Puerto Rico is an American citizen?

An independent country where everyone is American?

How does that work?

I don't have time to solve such trivial problems

Very simple.

Puerto Rico is NOT an independent country … it is an unincorporated territory of the United States.

That is why Puerto Ricans are US citizens.

as i understand it, the folks in the PR get public assistance but pay no taxes. That's BS

Ever been around a bunch of PR, and here what most think of the US

Cut them lose.

Watch them become Haiti real quick, while crying out. Where did uncle sugar go

There are lots of little Islands that would love to have our Military bases and money

You need to broaden your understanding … Puerto Ricans pay plenty of taxes.

Sales and Use Tax

Puerto Rican Income Tax in lieu of Federal Income Tax.

Federal Payroll Taxes, including Social Security

Federal Import/Export taxes

… they're likely a few others.

Puerto Rico is also home to only one US military base which is on the smaller side as far as US military bases go.

They don't have one. It used to be pharma.

They aren't going to vote for independence then.

Of course, they might just disappear, rising sea levels and all that.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Dated, misinformed information … likely from someone who has never been in Puerto Rico and gets all their information (unreliable) from the internet and Fox News.

Puerto Rico still exports about 50% more than they import.

Yes, Pharma is not as strong in PR as it once was … but still has a significant presence. I am aware of two major american pharmaceutical companies that have made capital investments in manufacturing facilities in PR within the past three years.

Chemicals and medical devices are strong and primarily for export.

Other manufacturing, especially electronics, also contribute to the export economy.

Tourism is a big sector of the economy.

Puerto Rico while not a narco state, about 20% of its GDP last year came from drugs. A lot of corruption in local governments and police there. Anyway it's up to the people there if they want to become a state, I don't have an opinion one way or another. I'd welcome them into the union - most of the boricuans i know come to the states because of overcrowding there and better economic opportunities.

Big words, intended to obfuscate the fact that PR is plagued by third-world poverty and an impending financial crisis that makes Greece look like Singapore.

Sorry if my words were too big for you .

No obfuscation intended … poverty and any financial crisis were not part of the discussion until you just brought it up.

Are you sure you can use obfuscate in a scathing attack on another person's use of big words?
