You shouldn't have thick skin when it comes to racism.

But there was no racism.

Post some BS article about OJ Simpson, knowing that that is White people's "great injustice" and then in the same thread call me uppity. Coincidence I think not.

Oh my goodness.

This is insane.

If "uppity" is considered a racism term on this forum, I quit. It's gone too far.

That's not fair. OJ got off because he had money. You should be just as mad about that as me.

The term "uppity n*****" has been used towards Blacks since slavery. You can claim ignorance if you want to but I am less forgiving. It was a bullchit remark and offensive to me.

If he had used the second word, I'd be on your side. He said uppity. Words mean things, and can mean different things when used in combination with other words.

"There's my b1tch."

"There's my b1tch, she's whelping as we speak."

See the difference? I know it's not like you to get upset over nothing, just gotta make sure what you are getting upset over is nothing or something. Hard to distinguish sometimes on da internets.

Jinx, I've seen some things on here that count as racism. This isn't one of them. It's just an article. Let this one go.

Uppity is only considered racist in the way I posted back the link on page one. It has a history behind it.

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

I guarantee you 99% of people who use the word uppity haven't a clue. Nobody in here did. To lash out and call someone racist for the innocent use of a very common word is offensive as hell.

Guys, uppity has racial connotations to it. If you've never heard it used that way, you wouldn't know it. I know where Jinx is coming from. It's all about context. He was wrong because Operator didn't mean it in that way, but he knows that now.

Yes, I have heard the term too, in the way you mean. I think it's used in Blazing Saddles, in fact. But anyone with any intelligence about them would never try to equate the word uppity with the same racial connotations as the n-word.

I know, and that's why I wrote him personally to explain this. It's also the reason I posted the link so folks could see where he was coming from.

This is ridiculous. To immediately jump to "RACISM!!" when a very common word is innocently used isn't justifiable. Sad that it's coming from you.

No. I do not see where he's coming from. Showing me that it has a history is fine, I get it, but to immediately threaten someone and call them a racist for using it in a completely innocent way (the way nearly EVERYONE uses it since it's so common) is offensive.

Operator got attacked for absolutely no reason. People need to stop calling everyone a racist for ridiculous sh*t.

I'm sorry your life has led you to feel like this and to distrust people to such an extent. You feel how you feel so I don't care to change your mind. You said you aren't the person to ##### with and likewise you don't know me either.

Agreed. When a comment is clearly racist, cal it what it is.

But you should be able to take a step back and consider whether the remark was definitely made in a racist context, or whether there was another, equally plausible explanation.

If you throw some sarcasm at me with some rapier wit, I can brush it off and I consider myself to be rather sensitive. If you're a just being a jerk, it's no issue either since I won't sink to your level. But that? To attack someone's very core being, something that can't be changed, is just wrong.

At work, we call it a personal filter. The way you look at something, based upon your own personal biases. We have been taught to understand which ones we have and to try listening and reading things, both understanding and putting aside those filters. When you do, it's surprising how much you misinterpret, each and every day.

Marvin, you and I have discussed before my feeling that resorting to a classification of racist as a first resort is counterproductive, especially when there are other, equally plausible explanations. It's a discussion killer, more often than not, and diverts what otherwise might have become interesting threads down a familiar path to an all-too-predictable conclusion.

I hear you, but Jinx doesn't know who's who on this forum. I've seen Janelle go into full meltdown mode because she thought AJ was being racist, when he was only being AJ. I've almost went off on Postmaster because he said dialectic, when I thought it was dialect.

Point is, what's thought as racist for us might not be for anyone else. Instead of ganging up on him, I'm trying to defuse this situation before someone gets 10 shots into their computer monitor.
