US fiancee at the interview?

Hi folks!

We're almost ready to get started on filing our I-129F, but we're trying to get a few more small questions answered first.

My big one is: Does it make a difference if the American fiancee is present during the K1 Visa interview?

My fiance will be traveling to Nairobi, Kenya to attend his interview and I plan to join him if the timing works out. I'm a new teacher and my vacation availability is somewhat limited because of that. So- does it look bad if the American fiancee is not present? If this is a "make or break" type of situation, I will find a way to get over there- but is it? Any insight is appreciated!! Thanks :)

You don't need to be there for the interview. Sometimes even if you are there they like to question the applicant separately. As long as you have all the paperwork correct and they believe the relationship is genuine you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck!

I don't think it makes difference but my fiance was with me during my interview and helped me a lot to ease the stress and nervous. On the top of that, when you get approved, you have your fiance(e) to share the good news at your side. That's one of the best moment ever in my life. The CO did not interview my fiance but after got approved, he asked me to bring in my fiance to the room and congratulated to both of us.

I flew to Guangzhou to be with my then-fiancee and (future) step-son at their visa interview. the Guangzhou US consulate does not allow the USC to be present at the interview. That being said, I brought along with me all manner of paperwork (required documents, evidence, etc.) for my then-fiancee to have available for the interview. I did give her my US passport and a relationship letter that I had prepared for the CO, to show to the CO to demonstrate that I was in town. I believe that he did review my passport stamps and kept the letter. My impression after debriefing with my family, was that a decision had already been made, unless the interview bombed. I do know that my wife certainly appreciated me being there to provide emotional support. For that reason alone, the trip was priceless!!

Go if you can and support your future spouse at this very special time. good.gif

YMMV.

Awesome feedback- thanks!

I certainly want to be there for the interview and I really do plan to make the trip (I think it would be fantastic! Plus, I'll be a bundle of nerves if I'm left waiting over here in the states while my fiance jumps through all the hoops alone).

I guess I just wanted to see if it's a BAD idea not to go- ie: it makes our relationship look weak/ illegitimate. Guess we'll cross our fingers and hope that we'll be able to schedule an interview time that will allow me to be there as well!

(Moderator hat off)

Very smart decision to go. Do you know how many points it scores when the beneficiary crams the U.S. citizen's passport under the Plexiglass as a first action?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
