My wonderful Canadian fiance and I are planning to tie the knot in early 2016, after he graduates from UWO in October of 2015. He's getting his Psychology degree with a focus in neuroscience, and all the useful diagnostic certifications he can snatch up, and would like to enter the field as soon as possible. He's already been speaking to teachers who have colleagues in North-Eastern Florida (where we'll be living) that can help him get started.

However, he's recently spoken with four different people who endured the K-1 process in the past and said that their immigrant fiance was unable to work until certain processes had been filed and cleared, and that meant around six months of not being able to get a job. He's buckling down to look for intern positions during that time, but my Google-Fu has led me to believe otherwise... However, it's not exactly solid. I've read that he can start working the second he enters the country, I've read that he can start working as soon as we're married, but it's all rather conflicting.

So, I figured I'd ask y'all since you seem to be a lot more knowledgable than myself... How long do I have to be his sugarmama before he can start pulling his weight? XD

You have 90 days to marry once he enters on the K-1. Then after you marry, you need to file a big package to adjust his status to Permanent Resident (K-1 is in fact, a non-immigrant visa). In that big package is a work permission card, which will be approved within 90 days of filing.

So, it will take 90 days plus how long it takes you to marry and file the package.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Yikes, so it seems we're still looking at up to five months from the time he comes into the country, by the time we add how long he'll be here for wedding planning prior to the actual ceremony. Thanks for the heads-up!

Marriage at the county courthouse usually takes only one week to schedule, then wait about a week for the certified marriage certificate(s) to arrive. Then you filel AOS and apply for the EAD (which will take about 3 months to arrive). So he could be working within about 3 months after arrival if you plan well and are quick about it.

Dont' forget about the CS to transcribe the vacc.records (make sure he obtains the DS-3025 form at the medical).

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!
