That is your perception of why people marry. Clearly, there are quite a few people here who have married to follow the law, not to prove their committment to each other. Manypeople marry if they get pregnant, because they are in a habit of a relationship. There wouldn't be the divorce rate there is if marriage = committment. Only people can be committed to a relationship, and obviously a legal document does not make them more so. Seriously, I have never seen such blatant twistation of facts to support an OPINION.

Exactly. Many people (at least, ones I know) seem to marry because they've always dreamed of getting to play at being a beautiful princess/landed gentry for the day, and damn it, they're going to live out that dream no matter what. I honestly don't believe most of them have more commitment to their relationship than a couple who see no need to get married, because they see it as a pointless bit of paper, and they're secure enough in their relationship to know they're committed to each other. There are plenty of people who seem to get married with about as much thought (or less) than they'd give to buying a new car. But their commitment is deeper than that of a couple who cohabit without getting married? Or a couple who may not otherwise have married so soon (or at all), but concede that they'll have to to be together, and then jump through every hoop USCIS can throw at them into the bargain? I think not!

(Still posting from work... I hope I don't sound too incoherent!)

Apologies if that came out garbled - I'm at work and, well, pretending to be working rather than posting on here!

some of us are not pretending to work at work :innocent:

Yeah, I should just give up the pretence altogether. I'm sure it's not fooling anyone.

Reflecting on this entire thread, I'm not surprized why the divorce rate is so high, and why some don't value marriage at all.

But that's where you're failing to see what everyone is saying.

Of course.

Because you're sat here saying 'oh no wonder the divorce rate is so high' as if the ppl who see no reason to marry are the ones contributing to it....when many ppl who see no reason to marry feel that way because the institution of marriage has been made a joke by the people who get married & divorced at whim.

And it's quite insulting to have it assumed that the level of commitment for the non-marrieds is lower than those who get married and get divorced. Where's THEIR commitment, or display thereof?

They (the non-marrieds) have an innate fear of marriage and commitment (which are of course synonymous), and therefore don't count. Even if they live together in blissful happiness 'til they die. And there would be a zero divorce rate were it not for people cohabiting first, then marrying - they're the only ones who get divorced, ya know. No, really.:unsure:
