FYI - No one is bound to your opinion but you, Lisa.

I realize that you are incapable of seeing this from any other perspective but your own. Perhaps you don't have enough experience with intelligent debate to know it when you see it. A debate is not always intended to change anyone's mind, but to engage in an exchange of ideas.

From where I sit, there was little other than attempts to convince others of a point of view; that studies you diagree with must be wrong, that I am an idiot and a troll, that cohabitation has no consequences, etc., etc. The fact that there was a lack of respect offered from all sides is irrelevent to you. You have an agenda and you intend to fulfill it.

You talk about how others expressed their opinion and incinuate that because I stuck to mine, there is something immature about doing so. Apparently, there is a double standard to this because I don't see any other opinions changing, nor did I fail to see childish, pendulent reactions from lots of folks here. But, form where you sit, the only incorrect one is me. Your agenda distracts from your objectivity. As long as you cannot be ojective, you have lost your right to point fingers.

I have no feelings about your change of heart toward me. I never had the oppotunity to experience any of your previous admiration and never knew about it. I only saw you doing what you do well - ragging on someone somewhere, As a result, my view of you is unchanged. You enjoy btching and you do it alot.

That is what's really sad.

I know you will want the last word, so have at it. I need to go.

When you can't debate, mock.

that's the problem...this is NOT a debate. No one's trying to get ppl to switch opinions...well, no one except you.

And as far as the mocking...omG...you need to go back and re-read this thread and all your replies and hang your head in shame for acting like such an unruly child incapable of respecting other people.

I used to think you were a very smart woman, SZ. I used to marvel at how you'd put a logical and compelling post together in the MENA forum & really think 'wow what a well spoken and capable woman'. In this thread, you have acted in a manner which tarnishes everything I felt. Not that you should cry or anything like that...I mean who am I to you? but at the same time, I am completely gobsmacked at how you have lost your rag and morphed into this childish, disrespectful, arrogant person who's selectively blind and apparantly illiterate to anything which you don't agree with. People...including me...have repeatedly expressed our opinions and have tried to appeal to your adult side to have a rational discussion, yet you just arent' interested & would rather play this 'poor persecuted me' routine who lashes out at pretty much everyone.

It's sad.

But wildly entertaining  ...so please do continue.

I am not the only person who was irritating to someone else, nor do I take resonsibility for your over reactions to my dissenting point of view. The fact is, azzholes are a dime a dozen on this thread. The repeated inability by some to read and/or discuss a subject with intelligence instead of insult and the pleasure they take in that made most of this thread just a few clowns short of a circus.

Huh, so you really did nothing wrong? You weren't over-aggressive or anything? Not even a little bit obtuse, mm? Are everyone's objections just totally irrational? Why does everyone keep picking on you? You're just trying to be nice and open-minded!

I'm quite sure i never claimed to be open-minded. I have a particular point of view, stood by it and defended myself against attack. Since this was not supposed to be a debate, as I am told, why complain that I held my ground and was unconvinced by your exaggerations, as I am still unmoved by them now?

No, SZ....I'm not insinuating anything. I have CLEARLY said what I mean.

No one's downing you for having an opinion or holding steadfast to your opinion. But when you go around condescending to people and telling them that they are living their lives wrong, that's when you cross the line. Look back to where this first degenerated. A big moment for me was when I asked you nicely to stop calling me hon...you just kept on doing so. Is that the sign of intelligent discussion? No, maam, it is not. The 'hon' thing is just annoying...but the fact that you couldn't even respectfully stop using it & in fact used it more in efforts to irritate (I dunno?)...you showed yourself up as incapable of having an adult conversation.

Unfortunately, you have done yourself a huge disservice here...but then again, that is just my opinion, so obviously take it or leave it.

I cannot spell it out any clearer than that...and if there's any confusion, reread the thread.

Oh, I'm interested in debating! You'll see on the last page I laid out my basic criticism of your stance. Please feel free to respond.

As far as I recall, you never claimed open-mindedness as such. However, I interpreted your "acquaintances who voted for John Kerry" fable as some sort of admonishment to be open-minded, talk to more people, move outside our own little world, and such. It is we who should be open-minded, then?

Don't worry, she knows. She's just having fun now.

As I said before, if calling someone "hon" is so ofensive to you that you can;t get over it, you need to get a life.

It would be nice if the only name calling you've done to me was "hon", but you're clearly the more intelligent one among us.

Not.

Not.

She asked you several times NOT to call her that which makes it very strange that you then proceeded to get the word "hon" into every sentence possible. That is immature and you know it.

Unlike my friends in the example, I do talk to lots of different people. As a result, I was not surprised when Kerry lost.

However, that doesn't preclude me from having a specific point of view on any given subject. One cannot be open-minded about everything. I doubt that you are; why should I be?

So it is just we (the not yous of this thread) who are admonished to be more open-minded. Very well. I certainly do support your right to have strong convictions. It's just, in this case, yours is wrong. Your personal valuation of the symbol of marriage just isn't universal, so it can't be used as a gauge of other people's depth of committment to each other unless they acknowledge that they share that same valuation.
