Why can't Naturalized Americans get a US Passport?

You will get your passport application form in the package at the Oath (everybody gets one) with voting registration and ssn info update form and they will tell you all about it.

When I had my Oath, I could apply for passport right there (after the ceremony) - I didn't do it, cause I wanted to update my Driver's License first, before sending my Naturalization Certificate with passport form....

There are Passport Services in the major court houses (at least here in AZ) as well as in most Post Offices

Thank you for the infos. I would love to apply AT the Naturalization. However, I do not think I will have the money. Thank God it is free to Naturalize. However, the $1,500 in trasportation just to get to and from USCIS will be years out of our savings!

Yes, I have been to the post office. That was the topic of my original post and this whole thread.

Any advice to my question? Thank you!

Why don't you just use google? Many answers can be had that way.

http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/new.html

The post office is not the agency that issues passports. No.

If we are supposed to use google, what is the purpose of this forum then?

Who said anything about the post office being the "agency that issues passports"? Everyone knows that is the US DOS.

Do you have anything to add to the thread? Or are you just trolling?

Yes there is such a thing as a passport office a.k.a. the passport agency.

My husband went to one in NYC and submitted his passport application. You first call for an appointment and then go to the office with all the required documentation and completed form. He received his in 24 hours due to an expedite request.

Secondly you can mail the passport application form/apply by mail if you are renewing a passport. First time applicants need to appear in person.

But I am afraid that walking 2,000 miles would likely kill me... Also, as I am not yet a US Citizen, how could I "renew" a US Passport?

Either there is a miscommunication somewhere, or there is a serious outbreak of xenophobia in your town, or people are f***ing with you.

You will get a passport application when you naturalize. You certainly can't apply for a passport before that, so don't sweat it.

- once you get the passport application at your oath ceremony, go online and look up the rules. There's bound to be an instruction sheet online somewhere that says how to apply with your Naturalization certificate. Then you fill everything out, go to the post office and send it in, with all your supporting documentation.

You can get a driver's licence.

-but not just by asking for it. You may have to take tests to get it, but there's no reason that, providing you pass the tests, you should not be able to get a driver's license as long as you have your SSN and Greencard to prove that you're there legally. You may need to go to the DMV in the next town if the ones in your town are being a**holes.

I don't mean to judge - I don't know you and your written English is excellent... but is it at all possible that your accent makes it hard for the people you're getting information from to understand you?

I would suggest doing a web search for the rules for applying for your d.l. You should be able to get that right away. (again, no blue passport until you're naturalized.) Look up the rules, including what documentation you need to show and what tests you may need to take for your state. Print them out and take them to the DMV. Then if you start getting this garbage from the people there, show them the information. It could be that they've never processed such an application before. You may have to "teach them how."

Good luck!

I am not from the USA. I do not have a US Birth Certificate.

Also, my name is illegal.

Therefore no State Identification. Do I have an accent in text as well? If you know of a way I can get a State issued identification with an illegal name and no US Live Birth Certicate, please inform me!

I do not understand. How can you be naturalized if going to be soon?

After you become a citizen you take the naturalization certificate and apply for the passport. You can't apply till you get the certificate.

I am not.

You cannot. That is my question.

Here is how you get a license: There are different requirements if you are foreign born. http://www.dmv.org/id-idaho/id-cards.php#What-Should-I-Bring

I don't really understand why you say your name is illegal. What do you mean by that?

If the documents described above cannot be obtained, the examiner will require a combination of documents from the primary and secondary document lists that provide proof of your legal name, date of birth, and identity (including a picture.)

Primary documents verify your age and identity, and must contain your full legal name and date of birth. These documents must be verifiable as authentic (the examiner must be able to contact the issuing agency to determine authenticity). The following are examples of primary documents:

  1. Out of state driver’s license or ID card (with a photo) not expired for five years or more.
Idaho driver’s license or ID card not expired for five years or more.
Original naturalization/citizenship document.
Certified original birth certificate or certified abstract.
Valid Immigration and Naturalization card from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
U.S. military photo identification card.
U.S. passport or passport card
Valid Foreign passport with a valid U.S. VISA.
Idaho concealed weapons permit not expired for one year or more.
Veteran’s Universal Access Card with photo.
Native American ID card with photo.

First off you went to a post office asking about a passport and your not naturalized yet. They told you a line to get rid of you. You don't need a driver's licensee to get a passport. You do however need to present identification to the post master. The one they always asked for is a DL because it's the most common, it's a photo ID and a post office worker knows what it looks like. After being naturalized you can use the naturalization certificate and your current national passport for photo identification. Or you can just go to the local motor vehicle office and get issued a state identification card which is a Driver license card that says identification only not valid for motor vehicle operation. At least that's what it says in my state.

Second not all post offices accept passport applications or do the passport photo's. You can look at the USPS web site at the link below to find out which passport office to go to. Again they won't even want to talk to you until you have a naturalization certificate.

Have you applied yet for Naturalization, it is not free unless you qualify for a fee waiver. I'm not sure why the trip to it is costing you so much either but you may want to explore your options to get there.

I do agree with the other poster that the passport office was just trying to get rid of you since you are asking questions about a US passport before having your certificate in hand. That and they probably do not know how to handle a naturalized application.

You should of been able to get a driver license following what ever the laws for your state are. That may mean doing the learners test and then road test. I don't think I've ever hear of a name in the US being illegal, maybe there is an error in USCIS computers and such that is making it hard for them to check you out. You would not be the first person who had trouble with your name, but for it to be out right illegal that would be odd as USCIS probably would brought that up long before now.

You must FIRST complete the oath and receive your naturalization certificate in order to even apply for a us passport. Until you take the oath, you are not a citizen and thus NOT eligible for a passport. Once you have that naturalization certificate, go back to the post office and turn in your completed application...

To apply for passport it would cost you around $200, less if you don't mind waiting longer for it. And by all means to Naturalize is NOT free... I guess you forgot about the $680 fee when you file N-400... so passport will cost you less...

$1,500 in transportation? Are you gonna fly there or what? My round ticket to Poland costs about that much...

I know EXACTLY what your original post said.... that is why I told you about the courthouse passport services so you can check your options...

Whoever told you that you cannot apply for driving license when have a Green Card (after you pass written test and road test of course) told you a big, fat LIE.

And how can a name be illegal??? What kind of name is that? How come you think it is illegal if you were able to get a Green Card???? Some things just don't make any sense....

Is ther a such thing as a "passport office"? I have never heard of such a thing. I have always been told in America the post office IS the passport office?
