This year I am getting chocolate covered strawberries and I AM SO EXCITED even though I had to pick them out and they are not a surprise.

My wife is the frugal one. I always have to encourage her to buy clothes and I rarely let her get anything other than name brand stuff. She bought some bracelets recently online that were like $30 total and felt bad about it #######? Meanwhile, she won't bat an eye at planning f'ing three week long extravaganza's to Hong Kong, Cali, Korea, etc. Or spending stupid amounts of money on God's gift to food.

I am also the frugal one. He spends $$$$$ on whatever crosses his fancy. My job is to be the killjoy and remind him he's trying to buy a condo. I guess because I've been a relatively well-off person and then lost much of it, and he's worked his way up from nothing to a well-paying position, I'm well aware that it can all disappear faster than you expect.

I've had to train myself to accept expensive gifts from him. I sometimes feel guilty about the money spent, but my male friends have assured me that refusing his generosity is a blow to his ego, and accepting his largesse given freely won't mark me out as a gold digger.

Not buying that load... a simple, "Hey babe, instead of buying me that (whatever), let's put that same amount of money towards the condo." A sensible alternative to how/where to put it, IMHO.

I try. It's a little better now that he's actually saving for it (and he is waaaaaaay better than I am at socking away retirement funds), but if he insists, it's rude to say no again and again. If it brings him pleasure and isn't done out of a sense of duty, I ultimately give him the pleasure.
