There was no or very little global compettion in the 1960s. It's an apples and oranges comparison.

Yes, we can thank all the free trade agreements for this. Corporations get richer, while the American worker is told that he/she has to compete directly against 3rd world rates of pay.

They will have more money, but everything will cost more, so they will be right back to square one.

Yeah, well so what? Allowing pay rates to stagnate while inflation continues due to other factors isn't going to help your average American to afford a half ways decent standard of living.

But the White House is pushing this, so the Democrats will make sure we get sold down the river, yet again. :(

So what to do? Impose large tariffs? Close the U.S. market to countries that pay lower wages than we do?

Not sure about you, but I like the fact that I can buy a TV for a couple hundred buck vs. 1000.

Nothing is expensive if you can afford it. Too many people spend way too much buy cheap white consumable goods and not saving and using their savings to buy stuff that they actually need. Instead most Americans reduced to using expensive credit to finance their lifestyles.

Well I think the republican party should get part of blame here too. President Obama obviously supports this bill, but then again so do the Republicans for the most part. The democrats in congress at least have some qualms about signing it, even if they eventually are arm twisted into supporting the bills passing.

People should pay market price for goods

Change the market, you change the market price. ;)

What should matter is where you want to see your national employment develop. Trade agreements such as this are a statement in that regard.

Why? This is a drive by the White House. Let the Administration take the blame.

Because I never hear Democrats praising Republicans for Bill Clinton's budget surplus. <_<

The Democrats don't need to suck up to the unions any longer. The Democrat union voter will soon be replaced by the formerly illegal, now legal immigrant.

I compared the prices of a few items purchased here to the prices in Thailand.

A sewing machine I bought my wife was 50% more in Thailand than the U.S.

The electric toothbrush I use was 40% higher.

That is the issue in the PI. They have a largely English speaking work force, that is somewhat educated, but the protectionist rules and corruption is so bad companies don't go there. You go in any store and anything imported is $$$$. The local stuff is cheap. Stuff like decent sliced Turkey is almost unheard of.

If you ship anything to the PI, it gets hit with almost 100% tariff. Unless you cram it in a Balikbyan box, in which you can cram anything and everything, and I don't think they ever check it.

I'll be paying for that too in the form of higher taxes because my salary is over some predetermined amount. So the fact I pay about 40% in taxes now is not enough to cover all the welfare cases and deadbeats. They will probably make it 45% next year.

What country do you live in? As of 2013, the tax rate in the USA was 39.6% for those making over $425,000.
