They did it by not hiring more people the same as they wil do now. Possiby even letting some employees go they have now to cover the extra expenses of salary. Of course they did get creative and just hired more part time also. Also many of those companies resisting on going overseas will now feel the need to do so just to stay competitive.

So retail outlets and hairdressers will relocate to mexico and china? That'll make it easy for their customers to visit laughing.gif

If wages are higher those workers will have more disposable income, boosting the economy. My heart bleeds at the thought of shareholders and directors on 200x the wages of the lowest paid getting less of a cut.

Real per capita gross product is MUCH HIGHER today than it was in the 1960s. That's REAL, so inflation-adjusted. And per-capita, so it's adjusted for population.

And yet, net worth of people at the bottom and middle is lower or the same.

So where did all that extra money go?

To the top, mostly.

How do you fix that?

Tax the rich. Leave the minimum wage alone. The minimum wage is a disincentive to be a loser.

They will have more money, but everything will cost more, so they will be right back to square one.

I have to disagree. We got some good people in.However if they worked and applied themselves they usually got hired on Permanent and could be at 10.00 within 6 months.

While this is true its not 1:1. Assuming an employer passes 100% of a minimum wage hike on to the consumer it works out roughly 1:10 worst case.

IE. If White Castle raises wages by 10%, the cost of a burger might spike as high as 1%.

There was no or very little global compettion in the 1960s. It's an apples and oranges comparison.

Where did you read that?

Companies don't like decrease revenue and income year to year. If they spend an extra 10% of labor, you can be sure they will raise the price by 10%.

Minimum wage is total bs. It's for high school kids. Anybody over 18 that worries about minimum wage should have gotten a better education. Nobody with a college degree earns minumum wage.

Why should I have to pay for their laziness and stupidity?

In NYC, the new mayor (white guy with a black wife and Al Sharpton's staff work with them) has a campaign to fight income inequality... I wonder where that came from...

I'll be paying for that too in the form of higher taxes because my salary is over some predetermined amount. So the fact I pay about 40% in taxes now is not enough to cover all the welfare cases and deadbeats. They will probably make it 45% next year.

If they want a higher income, go to college and grad school, and then you'll make a higher income. But that's too much of an effort for most deadbeats, they just want a free handout. Please don't anybody post about educational opportunities not be available to everybody. That's the biggest load of #######. Everybody who wants to CAN go to college.

Right? Those stupid, lazy single Moms working two minimum wage jobs trying to make ends meet so they can feed their kids should be shipped off to some foreign land. They don't have the right to breathe the same air we do.

Too many people go to college and get jobs that don't require college degrees. I think almost all mail carriers have college degrees but their job does not require it. We should not suggest everyone go to college, but work to build better apprentice programs and trade schools and pay people who want to do those jobs a living wage. We need janitors in this world.
