Touche. Probably not.

I was going to trade the ranger in about 6 years ago, but decided not to because it was running great and it was paid for. Now it's like a contest of how long I can drive it before it falls apart.

I'm still driving my 1997 Ford Ranger 4x4 with 88,000 miles on it. How's that for driving them into the ground?

That's nothing. My 1997 F150 is around 224,000 miles.

I bought it used in 1999, it was a dealer demo that had 8k on it. I only drive it back and forth to work everyday which is about 16 miles round trip. I make the occaisional Home Depot run with it, but other than that it doesn't get much use.

I've driven it into the ground and back out again. Still rolling with the original drive train down to the original water pump and alternator. It has had the front end rebuilt once and the u-joints replaced but other than that it's pretty much all original.

Im buried under lake effect snow in Western Michigan but I have to say my little '02 Acura RSX (170k miles and Ive only changed clutch disks.. and that was soooo due to my particular driving style, LOL) sports car is great in the snow. Light weight n huge antilock disks so its easy to stop, front wheel drive, 50/50 weight ratio means when I inevitably slide or start to spin I can catch it easily and its got great antilock breaks all around. We won't talk about how that "sporty" suspension feels like Im getting kicked in the kidneys when driving over these goat trails they have the nerve to call paved roads in this state though.

With good tires I think a good front wheel driver is just fine. You have to know how to drive though. I see big heavy 4 by 4s off the road and sliding out all the time. Those rednecks in their monster trucks think they can just power over or through everything and then all that weight starts to slide on black ice and they don't know what to do so off the road they go.

besides, my car looks AWESOME sliding sideways around icy turns like a flat tracker or drift racer.

Know how to drive in limited traction conditions and use gentle throttle and ease into brakes etc.. you can go over/through anything that isn't higher than your side boards in a front wheel drive with decent tires.

My fiancee likes SUVs though because she feels safer. So next winter might be a change.. But Im still thinking WRX or something rally racer for MY next wheels.. (right now I just miss my motorcycle though… Come back sun!!!! HATE Michigan!!)

…I thought that commercial was REALLY bad.. glorifying a lack of work/life balance to push over valuing consumption..

I visited the UP one time to go to a paper company. It was late March and the rivers were still frozen solid. I was suprised at the number of guys I talked to that did not own 3-wheel drive vehicles. Not nearly as popular up there.

Figures.

If you were a real good ole boy, you'd have an American made truck.
