Random Car/Customs Question

Hi,

I currently live in Canada, I am a US citizen and Perm. Resident of Canada. As soon as my husband gets his Visa (we are waiting for case complete) we plan to move to Texas. We are going to sell our little car here and would like to buy a new one (bigger) in the US. I have both an address in the US and one here in Canada. We obviously don't want to buy a new car here in Canada so can I cross the border to Vermont or NY, buy a car at say Car Max, bring it back to Canada, pack it up and make the move? I guess my question is... would I have to pay duties on the car considering that I have an address in both countries? Hope I am making sense.

Any input would be helpful!

Thanks!

If you are the US Citizen and have the car insured have plates etc. you don't have to. It would be different if you would bring the car to Canada and stayed there.

As long as you own the car and have plates on it, you shouldn't have any issues. You may want to look it up on the CBSA however, as they would be the ones who would be allowing your car into Canada. You shouldn't have issues bringing it to the USA as it's a US car.

It may be slightly more complicated because you'd have to get plates and insurance from your home state, ie Texas, wouldn't you? It would have to match your US address. Otherwise you'd pay twice because you'd have to import it into Canada and then import it again into the US. I'm not sure, but I don't think you'd be able to get, say, Vermont plates on it if that's not where you live.

It sounds like a good idea but you need to do more research.

Thanks everyone, our plan was to wait till we got to TX and just drive a rental there. But now we have an opportunity to buy a really nice travel trailer here and we need a bigger vehicle to pull it to Texas. Next option is to see if we can pull the trailer with a UHaul.

As long as the trailer is a bumper pull and when loaded, doesn't exceed the towing limit of the uhaul you should. I know you can rent uhaul trailers to tow behind the uhauls so I can't see why another type of trailer would be not allowed. I've also seen people towing their cars and cars on trailers.
